In May, 2014, a 16 year-old boy was arrested for allegedly using his computer to fake emergency calls to create terror hoaxes. The arrest was based on the IP address supplied to local law enforcement from the FBI, and acted upon by the detective in charge of the case, Officer Joel Demore, of the Ottawa Police services.
The youth was charged with 60 offences on the basis of the IP address being his, including public mischief, conveying false information and more alarmingly, death threats. However, it has been recognized by hacker @AerithXOR that these charges are unfounded, as IP addresses can be faked, and that the father of the teenager charged is said to have evidence that the computer was in fact hacked.
Supported by Anonymous, operation Soaring Eagle (#OpSoaringEagle) was commenced two weeks ago, with the Ottawa Police being the main target. The department was warned that communications on the internet, domains and servers will be hijacked as a response to the debauched investigation of the 16 year-old boy.
@AerithXOR has also taken the credit for shutting down the Ottawa Police mail server, gaining access to incoming and outgoing logs, and was working on shutting down the Supreme Court of Canada’s website. His main claim was that Officer Demore acted upon the given IP address without conducting any further investigation to see if the computer had been compromised by external forces. [1]

As great as this is, there are more important issues in Canada than this. I would suggest focusing on Harper, his attack ads, and the damage he is doing to the people of my country. While he remains in power, the citizens of Canada will get less and less freedom, less and less rights, and be treated like slaves to satisfy himself. Please, please hear this, and help Canadians fight against a tyrant who seeks to remove our freedoms.

AGREED! Harper is trying (and succeeding) in copying the big brother state model of our neighbors to that south with his INSANE crime bill (Bill C-10) and Now Bill C-44, the so-called “Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act.” which, if (read:when) passed into law, the bill would:
Extend complete confidentiality to CSIS sources, informants or covert agents, creating a “class privilege” for their identity and forestalling most legal challenges to the use of their evidence in court.
Explicitly confirm the legal authority of CSIS to conduct investigations within or outside Canada, something CSIS has claimed it has but which has been questioned in light of recent court rulings.
Broaden explicit authorization for CSIS to seek and use Federal Court warrants to authorize investigative activities — including electronic intercepts and other covert surveillance activities — outside Canada “without regard to any other law, including that of any foreign state.”
For my American friends CSIS is like Canada’s NSA essentially.
Having said all this, YES there are more important issues involving Canada and our freedoms but this story is still an example of an injustice that we should not ignore and I am happy there are groups like Anonymous who will be a tool and voice for justice when the official rule of justice fails us!

What concerns me is that there is no indication of how this case was disposed of. Was the kid found guilty or not?
According to the story the Ottawa Police had to use the US FBI to get the kids IP address. This seems stunning (if true) as a simple search warrant served on the ISP would have provided the same information. Did the Ottawa Police actually use a foreign countries law enforcement to obtain information that is protected by Canadian law. If they did get this kids IP address from the FBI (illegally) should all that evidence not be tossed out as being illegally obtained evidence?
My public IP address shows me as living in Toronto. I actually live about a three hour drive west of Toronto. No trickery on my part. My ISP is in Toronto. BUt if you give me ten minutes I can easily make my public IP address appear to indicate I live in California, Texas, Sweden, or India.

If you wan’t help through physical means and not electronic means. I suggest supporting your local gun holders and possibly even criminals. Many people like me are willing to smash down the doors of the people you hack and solve things the good old fashioned way. Here in america and in my own city there have been several murders the media will not report on. First, I will point out that all 3 parties have major issues; but the big picture has eluded you and mostly because you fail to do your due-diligence by digging and reading actual Parliamentary documents that clearly outline the agendas of all 3 parties. Lets not forget that the biggest barriers to improving the state of our Country is to grow the economy, provide jobs and care for those who cannot care for themselves.
