4-Year-Old Son Shoots Pro-Gun Mom — Hours after Bragging about His Shooting Skills on Facebook

On March 7, during an online debate about guns as a means of self-defense, Florida mom and pro-gun activist Jamie Gilt, 31,  wrote on Facebook: “Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22.” On March 8, as she was towing a horse trailer with her son in the back seat, he picked up a loaded .45 handgun from the truck’s floor and fired into the driver’s seat, accidentally wounding the gun-rights advocate in the back.

Police said the truck was spotted by a sheriff’s deputy who noticed Gilt in the driver’s seat “motioning to him as if she needed assistance.” The deputy provided first aid until the paramedics arrived and took her to the University of Florida Health in Gainesville, where she is reported to be in a stable condition.

“She was shot through the seat and the round went through her back. There was a booster seat in the back of the vehicle, but, however, the boy was not strapped in when the deputy got to them,” Sheriff’s Captain Joseph Wells said.

Police are now investigating whether the incident warrants criminal charges because under the Florida law, “it a misdemeanor for a person to store or leave, on a premise under his or her control, a loaded firearm in such a manner that it is likely a child can gain access to the firearm.”

“Those questions center around how is the firearm secured? Where was it carried in the vehicle? And exactly how did the young boy come in possession of the firearm? I’d like to take the opportunity to remind everybody that the Florida statute is specific, and it does state that the adult household member or the child’s guardian is responsible for taking all measures necessary to keep firearms out of the reach of young people,” Wells told WJXT.

Gilt manages a Facebook page called “Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense,” which has since been deactivated, which features pro-gun images, including a photograph of a woman pointing a gun with the caption, “The more I learn about my government, the more I love my guns!”

A number of gun advocates consider ownership a birthright and an essential part of the nation’s heritage. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution states: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” But the “right” kills more than 30,000 Americans every year. The United States also has the highest homicide-by-firearm rate among the world’s most developed nations.

Don’t you think our obsession with guns has gone into the realm of the absurd?

  1. This is why gun laws need to be changed. Mandatory classes. Mandatory psych eval. Mandatory background check. Mandatory wait on any weapon purchase until all data is collected and verified.

  2. My respect for your organization is dwindling. This whole article reeks of manufactured propaganda, spun around a lapse in judgment and an innocent accident. I would also be interested in your source for those statistics, because they look bogus.

    • They provided the sources. You see the links that are highlighted a different color? Click on them, genius. Those statistics come from the Department of Health Services, UCLA School of Public Health. You almost can’t get more legit than that.

Sorry if they say things you don’t like to hear, but it sounds like a personal problem to me.

      • If you take any look at murder rates ‘not gun murders’ in countries that have baned guns u will see just as many ppl die just with different weapons this artical should have focused on gun accidents alone instead of lumping them together. It feels like pushing an agenda more then news the lady was stupid with her gun there was an accident they happen

    • You are a prime example of why other countries think the “Average American” is dumb and lazy. Before spewing garbage why don’t you look up the stats.

  3. You fuckers would then basically allow niggers to overrun homes of law abiding citizens and murder, rape and loot as far as they can. Respect for you are getting less and less by the day. I wish you hand in all your guns and your families got wiped out by these black savages, then you will understand a nigger will always be a nigger

    • Okay, I can’t tell if you’re just a lonely, 40-year-old chronic masturbater who lives in his mom’s attic and has nothing better to do with his life than troll, or if you actually meant all that ridiculous crap, but I think it’s safe to say no true Anon would want anything to do with you, so you can probably take any respect you have for the movement and shove it up your ass sideways.

Good-bye, Sir. You will not be missed.

    • The colour of your skin does not make a savage. The words you have said come from hate and breed hate. That is savage. Nigger is a word used by savages to undermine another of a different skin as they murdered and raped them. How can you expect a group of people that have been shown nothing but hate for as long as can be remembered to act consistently with forgiveness and decorum? People will brake and it’s people like you that have broken them. Feel ashamed for your actions, words and hate you have generated hidden behind a screen. Reflect and move on.

      • There can be niggers of any race. The word means ignorant and the whole slave shit. There were white irish slaves long before the blacks. Pretty much every race has been a slave at one point or another. We’re all humans who cares about skin color.

        • Nigger comes from negro, which means black in Spanish and is derived from the Latin word niger, also meaning black. If anyone is ignorant it’s you.

      • I would have to agree with “Bob”. Every race/ethnic/religious group has been oppressed at some point in history. I’m uncertain as to why we keep reliving this and are being conditioned to feel bad for something that happened so long ago. I know I’m certainly not going to feel bad or guilty for what my dumb ancestors did so long ago. I do agree with you on the fact that anyone can be the “N” word which shows their lack of intelligence. However, I think you too need to reflect and move on my friend. “Raiden” is just showing how stupid he really is. There’s no need to pay attention to his ignorant ideology. At some point he will get his come-uppins. The guy upstairs will make certain of that.

  4. Not my business not your business not my opinion and damned sure not your opinion to tell anyone in life what they can or cannot do! Period and my personal opinion it was “her” mistake not some dumb bitch ass excuse for you sorry ass people to pose opinions about guns. The damned bullets are the problem hell I can shoot you with a metal tube a bullet and a pin point it is that simple. I think getting shot in the back she had learned “her” mistake so move your ass alone with opinions and it’s shit like this that is making this damned country into a police state! Wanna be told when you can eat or go to the bathroom? Keep this shit up and you northerns that rely on everyone else because you cannot defend yourself you will be the first to go relying on others and your government. Great job!

    • Quite frankly, I have absolutely no idea what you are saying. Can you perhaps stop using one single sentence that runs on for an entire paragraph? Can you also, in that long winded rambling of yours, make at least one point? Your just running your mouth and making absolutely no sense. BTW numb skull, you guys are already a police state and are being told what to do, when to do it and what to think. It’s already happening! You’re just too ignorant to see it.

  5. I find it interesting to see the hate demonstrated by the “gun nuts”…. Now, I mean gun nut in the sense that they are not actually gun advocates but fear/hate mongers! I own nearly 30 guns, that I have for hunting for me and my kids. Each gun is locked in my safe and have trigger guards on them. I spent 11 years in the Army which included becoming a drill sergeant; at no time in my civilian life have I felt the need to have a weapon to defend myself…. I do have a concealed carry permit which I got to better understand the issue…

I will concede that many of the laws individuals have stated, such as: back ground checks, waiting periods, etc… would not have helped to prevent this accident. HOWEVER!!!!!!! why can’t we demand strict training and licensing for individuals who want to own weapons? Why can’t we demand that those who feel the need to carry a weapon be highly trained in how to care for and properly use a firearm? The BS training that I got for my concealed permit in NO way prepared me for the responsibility of carrying a weapon. In fact, the instructor was basically rubber stamping each person in the class despite over half of the individuals in my class had no idea how to even shoot a gun!

We need to develop some common sense laws that put weapons into the hands of proven responsible individuals. While this does not prevent the bad guys from having them, it does prevent idiots like this woman from having one.

    • I totally agree with you Aaron. I can’t for the life of me understand why there are stricter regulations and training to get a driver’s license but any idiot can buy a gun. This makes absolutely no sense.

  6. Its really very simple. Tighter gun laws equals less gun crime. There is a reason European countries have low gum crime, because they are much stricter gun laws. Can you see the pattern??

    • And if you look at us statistics they show places that have a higher ccw carrier the crime rate is way lower also if you made gun laws tighter won’t do shit to stop a criminal from getting a gun still just will make it harder for law abiding citizens to.

      • Where are those stats you are rambling on about? I don’t understand why guns can’t just be more regulated and at least have training as a mandatory requirement. I don’t think the ‘Average Walmart Shopper’ should have access to guns if you ask me. Lol

  7. This article is misleading, not because of what is says so much as what it leaves out. It is proven statistically that the murder rate by guns is something like 4 x higher in Chicago and New York, where they have the strictest gun laws in the nation. More guns means less crime, exponentially. If you subtracted the 4 largest anti-gun cities from the equAtion, US deaths by guns would be very low. Also, 0 deaths by terrorism on the graph is false. WhT about the California shootings? Ft Hood shooting? This article is not objective.

  8. Its okay to have guns, but not loaded ones around small children nor is it right to leave children where a loaded gun is. We have a right to have a gun, but if its loaded we have to use all safety measurements to maintain that our guns do no harm to children and if you were teaching that child to shoot at a age where a child doesn’t fully understand how to handle a gun then I as a believer that we have the right to bear arms think this mother should be charged with child endangerment. We the people have the right to arms, but not the right of being stupid and this mother needs to learn a lesson in safety and the responsibility that comes in being a gun owner.
