The story begins at a health food store in Henderson, NV on January the 30th of 2015. A man was apparently trying to return some protein powder; he allegedly turned aggressive and threatened to rob the store. The people working at the shop quickly called the police and described the unruly customer as a black male wearing a black and tan t-shirt who had already left in an SUV.
The police arrived on the scene, their dashcam recording the event for posterity, and proceeded to ignore the part about “black male who had already left”. Instead, they stopped the very first unlucky person they saw: Arturo Arenas-Alvarez.
Arenas-Alvarez had just arrived at the shopping center and did not understand why several police officers were pointing their guns at him, demanding that he put his hands in the air.
An officer asks him in Spanish to approach the vehicle, and before Arenas-Alvarez even got to them one brilliant officer finally realized that they had apprehended the wrong man.
“That’s not him, dude. That’s not a black man in a black shirt,” the officer said to another. This was apparently not enough for them, and they detained Arenas-Alvarez anyway.
An officer can be heard trying to persuade him that all was well. “They thought that you were involved in a robbery. I don’t- you don’t look like the person, so it’s OK now, OK?”
Unfortunately, Arenas-Alvarez’s troubles had only just begun.
“Stand by a couple of minutes. K9-1 is about two minutes out,” Sargent James Mitchel is heard over the radio.
Arenas-Alvarez’s 17-month-old daughter, Ayleen, was still strapped into his SUV’s baby car seat. Before he could tell the officers about his baby daughter, Sergeant Mitchell was at the scene with his Belgian Malinois. He promptly sent the dog into the SUV.
“My baby,” Arenas-Alvarez can be heard desperately pleading. “I’ve got my baby.”
One officer quickly shouts, “there’s an infant in that car! There’s an infant in that car!”
He was too late, and Ayleen’s screams can be heard in the video. The dog was biting into her right arm, leaving her with nine puncture wounds and abrasions by the time it let go.
After the incident, Mitchell can be heard saying “God damn, guys, you gotta f**king tell me!”
“The last forearm, the guy didn’t have anything left but bone,” he said.
“All that happened was totally solid. Just a sh***y set of circumstances that all rolled into — what could’ve been much worse. So just get that whole timeline out there,” said another officer. A baby had just been mauled by one of their own dogs, and apparently that was not the worst case scenario for police in America.
In an all-too-common response to this sort of police activity, Mitchell and the dog were only temporarily taken off the streets. They’ve since been allowed to return to their regular routine.
Henderson city has agreed to pay a paltry 13,000 dollars for the near-killing of Arenas-Alvarez’s baby. After legal fees, that number falls to 8,537.69 dollars.
8,537.69 dollars which Arenas-Alvarez’s family cannot even withdraw without a court order.
This isn’t the first case of cops allowing their dogs to treat children as chew-toys: last year a 4-year-old child of a police officer was bitten so badly by his father’s K-9 that his leg had to be amputated. His dog was also a Belgian Malinois.

This is the problem with our country. These cops are scared for their lives too more so now because of CRAP like this. The windows on the truck are tinted and they only saw someone in there. They let the dog go BEFORE they knew it was a baby. Once they were told they immediately got in there. Cops are human and not perfect. BUT I DO NOT SEE ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE YOU REPORT THAT THEY INTENTIONALLY LET THE DOG LOOSE ON A CHILD AS YOU ARE TRYING TO PORTRAY. what happened to the 2 minutes at least , before the dog got there? what interaction between the guy n the cops on scene? you mean this k0 cop just pulls up and jumps out opens door to the dog, and points at the svu and says, sic? what were the others doing? what made the k9 cop think something was wrong? that needed a aggressive dog?
nothing was wrong….they are trained to over think and overreact…. and this is what happens as a result of that training…. this was stupid…stupid stupid on their part…they knew they didn’t have the right guy….let that man go and move the fuck on….now the real perp gets away and a baby is left scared for life…. typical…

There should have been no reason to let a dog anywhere near the vehicle. They has already found that it was not the person wanted. What the hell is wrong with these idiots?

“You”are more of a problem than crooked cops are in American society.A person is obviously apprehended wrongly,then a child is hurt because of their mistakes.Before the K-9 was let loose another officer advised his partner that it was not the descripted perpetrator.It’s in your nature to be so “cold” .You account for years and years of your family’s history through this one comment you have made.The circumstances of what happened to the child was unfortunate and should not have been settled as such.Minorities in America are systematically battered in every way.

That officer did in fact let thàt dog loose without all the facts. He had a loaded weapon and allowed it free to maim at will.

I have family who are police officers and I know canine officers and none of them would ever allow their dog to attack anyone without being commanded to do so…the dogs have specific training, drugs or explosives or protection. What was this dogs training and although I am a dog lover if it attacked a baby without being ordered to, then it is to unstable and should be put down. But I also want to know why the dad did not say immediately to the officers,” my baby is in my vehicle and you need to let me go get her.” I also hope an attorney reads this post and offers to help the family get considerably more than 8K for their baby being mauled.
You try explaining to the cops when you are being cuffed for something you know nothing about while guns are being waved in your face. I know nothing about K9 units but do know police. Not all American cops are stupid. They should’ve definitely gotten more for this because of info on here I see the guy should have been let go if he didn’t fit description. That being said, other countries are a lot worse than here they just aren’t on video. If you don’t like America ….leave
They obviously need to retire the Belgian Malinois from being in service. They should not have any dogs on the force that are hard to control due to children.
