To support internet access or not? A recent study was conducted by a Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) in collaboration with Ohio State University, the analytical SecDev Foundation, and the School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, to find out a general consensus.

The polls demonstrated that most Russians would be in support of blocking Internet access in case of an emergency, and that a staggering 58 percent would support shutting it down entirely. A block in Internet access, in the event of mass protests, saw 9 percent in support, and a further 48 percent supported a full shut down if national security was in question and that they do not perceive attempts to control the Internet as an infringement on the freedom of speech.

According to RBC, the polls were conducted across 42 Russian regions and based from a representative sample. Of those among the surveyed, 57 percent didn’t use the Internet, and almost half of those polled were displaying support for filtering of news, censorship, and blocking social media groups that dedicated their time to rallying and organizing anti-government protests.

However in contrast, most participating in the polls said that the Internet was not seen as a threat to their family values.
