Frisco Texas. It seems that the Frisco Police have decided to take one more step towards curtailing the criminal underground menace of…. Cue ominous music… Underage PARTIES. Police department reps seem fixated on obtaining money from the federal authorities to purchase and set up a mini spy-grid which will use the latest in Social Media Surveilance Tech to “protect” us…. They have already made an application to the “Urban Area Security Initiative Grant,” which is being offered by the Department of Homeland Security. Awesome work the DHS is doing by the way.
This project will enhance the intelligence and operational capabilities of our NIMS Type 3 SWAT Team. With the award of this grant, we will enhance our tactical planning and response capabilities by using a location based social media monitoring tool that can assist our planning efforts and help make better informed decisions regarding ongoing or upcoming incidents or events. It will assist with gauging public sentiment during the planning stages of large scale public events such as major sporting events or concerts and can also help make informed decisions during actual emergency situations requiring immediate response such as tornadoes or other natural disasters, active shooter incidents, bombings, barricaded persons, hostage situations or other emergency type incidents. Regardless of the incident or event being monitored, public safety is the primary focus. This grant will allow us to retrieve and analyze publicly available data in real-time which will ultimately increase our effectiveness during times of crisis by increasing our situational awareness ultimately allowing us to better deploy resources which in turn could save on personnel costs and potentially save lives.
TL;DR , something about allowing SWAT teams to better plan how they’ll invade your home by using your social media statuses and updates against you….( updating status to “taking shower” or “attaching fuse to nuke” etc).
Something about using social media to plan for emergencies (sad, really. I’m going to assume that they’ll completely ignore all those 911 calls so that they can devote yet more man-power to scouring the internet for the next trending emergency… Bieber pees somewhere, O.M.G)….
Something about invading your privacy is NOT invading your privacy because you had not read the T and Cs of Facebook (dontcha LOVE publicly available information about yourself?)…..
And of course, this will somehow save lives. Somehow. Let’s not forget that this is coming from a body that is extremely proficient at taking civilian lives for no reason….
Just recently, the Frisco Police Department received notification from an outside Law Enforcement agency regarding a very large scale underage party that had gotten out of hand. The other agency was made aware of this information through the use of a social media monitoring program.
Yup. The ONE practical use they find for this surveillance solution, is to stop an underage party. See, this was NEVER about stopping terrorists, (Islamic, right-wing, satanic etc) and ALL about stomping down on petty infractions. And being one step ahead of those devious kids.
