Video footage of a police officer buying a new pair of shoes for a barefoot man has gone viral on many social media platforms.
The video, which was captured by a bystander in Lindenwold, New Jersey, has been described by many as “an example for all of us.” According to the account of the story, Officer Kenya Joyner of the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), was on routine patrol when he was flagged down by a bus driver.
The Huffington Post said the bus driver complained that one of the passengers was not wearing shoes. Since all passengers are required to wear footwear on buses at all times, the bus driver wanted to make sure that it was enforced.
To solve the problem, the officer escorted the man off the bus and asked him where his shoes were. “I don’t have any,” the barefoot man replied.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Joyner then walked away from the man and disappeared from the scene. A few minutes later, he returned with something in his hands.
He had gone across the street to a Payless shoe store, and had purchased a pair of shoes for the man.
“I just felt like the gentleman simply was on hard times. He wanted to ride on the bus but he couldn’t afford shoes; there was no need for me to arrest him for that,” Joyner told KYW-TV.
The Inquirer has reported that little is known about the barefoot man; however, Joyner said the man might be homeless and needed support.
The eyewitness who recorded the incident, Kayla Palmer, told Joyner in the video that she was going to show everyone the unusual and kind gesture he had just made.
In the video, Palmer approached Joyner and told him, “That was nice of you. I wanna shake your hand. You’re gonna go viral!”
Palmer further added, “I could tell he was really humble. He didn’t want any recognition for it.”
DRPA CEO, John Hanson praised Joyner for his thoughtful gesture and urged other officers to emulate their colleague.
“I think he did the right thing. He went above and beyond. He was his best self I think in that action and he set an example for all of us,” Hanson said.
