The world learns quick. No sooner than the United States passes new laws allowing foreign governments to be held liable for terrorists attacks, other countries are now returning the favor. Iran announced Wednesday the passage of a new law which will allow the United States government to be sued, just as the country has recently done to others.
It is no secret, the United States considers itself the worlds police and has over 800 military bases worldwide. The United States is also the worlds leading manufacturer of weapons and has been the single largest supplier behind every major armed conflict around the world over the last several decades. Now that the United States legislature has set precedent, and will be suing countries the world over for their part in international conflicts, these countries will do the same to the United States.
Iran has announced plans to sue the United States for $68 billion dollars as they want to hold the country responsible for their Warmongering and influence in world affairs. Iran says they are seeking damages for what they call “material or moral damages” which have resulted from 63 years of “hostile action and crime” around the world on behalf of the United States government- particularly against Iran and other Muslim countries.
Last March, a U.S. District Judge, George Daniels, ordered Iran to pay $10 billion dollars in damages to the families of 9/11/2001. The court found that although the attackers were largely Saudi Arabian, the attackers first passed through Iran before they came to the United States. However, the passports of the attackers were never stamped in Iran, leading judges to speculate the Iran was an accomplice to the crimes. In response to the ruling, Iran called it “ridiculous“.
Late last April, the United States Supreme Court passed a landmark ruling which held Iran accountable for $2 billion dollars in damages for the Beirut Marine barracks bombing of 1982, and Khobar Towers attack of 1996. The money was taken from money frozen from Iran’s central bank – the money was being held in New York. In response to these actions, promised to fight the US in international court, going as far as to say that the United States violated international treaties in taking the money.
Just two days ago, the US Senate passed a new bill holding Saudi Arabia liable for the terror attack of September, 11th 2001. The legislating is known as the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act or JASTA and was passed unanimously by Congress. The bill removes sovereign immunity and allows survivors and families of terror attacks to sue foreign government and seek damages in federal courts. Sovereign immunity previously blocked these types of actions. Saudi Arabia remains strongly opposed to this new law, claiming their is no direct evidence linking the government to the attacks. Saudi Arabia has also threatened to protest the new law by selling off $750 billion dollars in US securities and assets.
Now, the United States is getting a taste of their own medicine. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the new law passed by Iran this week directly states that “the Government has the duty to take the necessary measures seeking compensation for material and moral damages caused by the United States.” In addition to the countless proxy Wars the United States initiated and funded over the last several years, Iran specifically cites the 1953 CIA-led attempt to oust Iran’s Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. – something which the CIA admitted to in 2013. Iran claims, justifiable so given the freezing of Iranian assets for decades, the the United States has unjustly interfered in with their country through immoral and violent means. Now they the United States finds it necessary to begin suing foreign countries, foreign countries are simply following their example and returning the favor.
The bill has already been approved by Iran legal system, as Vice President Majid Ansari said, “Iranian courts have already ruled that the US pay $68 billion in damages for its hostile actions” towards Iran.
