The latest gas attacks in the north-western province of Idlib, which have left at least 58 people dead, including 9 children, have got everyone guessing who is responsible.
The gas attacks are reminiscent of those in the past, where Syria was accused of chemical warfare against its people. A wave of chlorine gas attacks occurred in 2015, despite a US-Russia plan to dismantle the Syrian “chemical network and join an international treaty banning their use,” the ABC reported in 2015.
Russia then demanded answers to who was accountable, and will most likely in the coming weeks repeat those same actions.
But caution must be heeded in pointing the finger of blame without solid evidence. Every country eager to blame has equal motive for conducting these cruel chemical attacks on Syrian civilians.
What must be taken into consideration when uncovering this latest who-dun-it mystery is this, however:
The recent 400-strong deployment of U.S. Marines positioned illegally on Syrian’s northern front without Syrian President Assad’s invite.
Syrian troops would gain a slight advantage by attacking the al-Qaeda terrorist haunt that is Idlib. But it begs the question at what cost? The Syrian proxy war is front and center of the international arena; the world is already closely scrutinizing theirs and Assad’s actions.
Russia may have also been the cause, but fingers were quickly pointed at them for the last ‘Air force mishap’ in Idlib, which was eventually confirmed that the Russians weren’t even flying in the area when the bombing occurred.
And Russia has vehemently condemned the use of chemicals against civilians in Syria in the past.
Also, initial reports of the chemical attack seemed to have originated from the White Helmets, a Syrian volunteer group – who although proclaims to be neutral, have received millions in funding from Western governments.
The question needs to also be asked: why do these attacks almost always occur in Idlib? Could it be possible that given it is a captured city that perhaps the terrorists are attacking the civilians? Reuters acknowledged last year that Islamic State has crude chemical weapons. Why does the MSM rarely report on this consideration?
Let’s not forget the slaughter of senior officers and soldiers in Idlib by terrorists in 2014. The Syrian military have seen their fair share of bloodshed, too.
The fact of the matter is, there is no proof yet as to who is responsible but there are many unanswered questions remaining. The Mainstream Media are quick to point out that the Russians did it – again – or that the evil doings of Assad are incapable of military interventions without killing numerous innocents. And maybe they’re right. But let’s not quickly dismiss the US role in this bloodthirsty operation. It would be abhorrent to suggest the West are capable of such brutal actions to further their agenda, but then again, is it really so absurd?
If Syria is ‘proven’ to have used chemical weapons, this then ‘forces’ the US to take a more aggressive approach in the Syrian conflict. And while this is decided and unabated, the Syrians continue to suffer.
What are your thoughts?
