The Morton County Sheriff’s Department has sunk to an all-time low. On top of their spraying protectors with water in freezing temperatures, and blowing a woman’s arm off with a grenade launcher, they have now requested that the Ace Hardware stop selling items that could be considered incendiary to protesters. This includes propane and other items that the water protectors require to provide heat through the cold winter months. The temperatures have reached below freezing; the Morton County Sheriff is using this to their advantage, declaring war against these peaceful demonstrators.
Kevin Gilbertt, an activist who has live-streamed much of his experience at Standing Rock, contacted Ace Hardware for confirmation. He made contact with a representative of the company, who stated their change in policy was true.
“That is true, Ace Hardware stores in the vicinity of the recent pipeline protests have been requested by law enforcement officials to refrain from selling materials that could be used as incendiary devices; so, Ace’s number one priority is to protect the safety of its employees, customers and the communities each store serves – Ace will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials. Ace’s compliance is not a reflection of any corporate viewpoint on the actual pipeline.”
Every action taken by a corporation takes a side. The message Ace has sent to the protesters is that they are on the government’s side and the oil companies, and are against the efforts to protect our nation’s water supply. The decision comes on the heels of an announcement by the Morton County Sheriff, that he will cut off supplies from the camp by implementing a blockade. He then backed down from his threat, stating he would issue a $1000 fine to anyone who brought food and supplies into the camp. For the debunkers who doubt this, even Snopes has rated this story as ‘mostly true.’ The Sheriff’s department will not be happy until the water protectors freeze to death.
The reports that protesters have used incendiary devices against law enforcement is another lie perpetrated by the Sheriff’s Office. No evidence has been put forth supporting their claims. The Sheriff’s Office has already shown their inclination to lie about the events at Standing Rock – already having been caught fabricating events to justify their brutality toward peaceful protesters. When they were challenged for spraying the water protectors with a water cannon, they justified it by saying that they were attempting to extinguish fires, although video evidence shows no fires were present. They also denied using flash bang grenades after it was shown that they deployed a weapon that nearly removed a woman’s arm.
The coercion of Ace Hardware to achieve the goals of their corporate overlords is a new low not seen from law enforcement in decades. Currently, there are thousands of US veterans enroute to Standing Rock, to show support for the water protectors. Celebrities and politicians alike, have called for Obama to step in and put an end to this crisis, yet nothing has been done. Unfortunately, it will probably take someone dying before the government decides to do the right thing: to listen to the voice of the people.
