In the heart of Miami Shores, located north of Miami City, stands the Enchanting Creations Bakery; a charming small business which has been catering to its clientele’s sweet tooth with a variety of deliciously baked treats, since 2007.
Recently, gay rights issues and its inevitable conflicts have been causing a stir across the U.S. As a result, the bakery and its owners, Alex and Karen Matamoros, have become targeted and regularly harassed by anti-gay rights activists. In the last few months, Enchanting Creations Bakery has seen an astounding amount of orders placed, by the activists themselves, for cakes decorated with anti-gay messages and phrases. The idea of these ‘trolling’ orders is to set a trap for small bakeries and “catch them in the act of discrimination.” Although the bakery pledged to meet any real orders made, they have devised a clever way to retaliate against the activists’ bullying and unwelcome requests.
The frustration caused by the continuous calls and orders made to the bakery, inspired the owners’ brilliant idea to donate all the profits made from any ‘hate cakes’ requested to the Human Rights Campaign. This meant that the money spent by the discriminating activists was ultimately being used to help fund and support a campaign they openly despise.
Below is the statement they have posted on their website:
“We believe that no one should ever be refused service – opposing discrimination by practicing it is not the answer. The only way to uphold our integrity as a company, and to maintain any hope of an eventual triumph over bigotry and discrimination, is to act in accordance with this belief.
We will not discriminate against potential customers, not even against those whose beliefs directly contradict our own – if the request is protected by the First Amendment we will honor it. This issue isn’t about approval; it’s about respect.
That said, so far these inquiries have amounted to nothing more than trolling; we have yet to receive a serious order. However, should the day come when an actual order is placed and paid for, we will not profit from discrimination.
Today we pledge that any profits we generate from the sale of a cake intended to discriminate against same-sex couples will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization who continues to fight for LGBT Equality.”
Today, the bakery is continuing to cater to its regular orders of stunning wedding cakes and delectable cupcakes, while also maintaining its fight against the bullying activists and their discriminating cause.
