MELBOURNE – Carnage overtook one of the world’s most liveable cities this week when a crazed man drove his street through the iconic Bourke Street Mall, killing 5, including a three-month-old baby and a ten-year-old girl, and injuring 37 others. Four more remain in critical condition.
A crazed 26-year-old driver, Dimitrious “Jimmy” Gargasoulas, plunged his car through the busy outdoors mall on Friday, after police were told to stand down from an ongoing pursuit, while air continued to track the car. The call has dragged the new ‘no-pursuit’ policy into question.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull made the trip down to Melbourne to pay his respects for the dead and the injured, saying to local media that “The offender will be charged with murder and will be dealt with the full severity of the law.
“We have the best police and security services in the world… Our police officers are working day and night to keep the people safe. They deserve our support,” the Prime Minster said.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten was lost for words. “There can be no satisfactory explanation for this act of evil.”
The pursuit began after Akiir Muo, 25, witnessed Gargasoulas – her boyfriend – attack his brother in a stabbing frenzy. She was reportedly held hostage in the car for several hours before being dropped off at the Bolte Bridge before the Bourke Street Mall massacre.
“It was scary… I was just thinking my life is going to end… I’m gonna die,” Muo said.
Gargasoulas was eventually apprehended after being shot by police, and is currently in hospital undergoing surgery with non-life threatening injuries.
Although authorities were quick to thwart any potential relationship of this to a terror attack, Gargasoulas had earlier posted troubling comments on Facebook and police said this was a deliberate act against the people of Melbourne.
The Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton noted for the media:
“This individual is not related to any counter-terrorism or any terrorism-related activities…
“He is not on our books as having any connection with terrorism and we’re not regarding this as a terrorism-related incident.
“What we do know of the person is there is an extensive family violence history involved.
“He has come to our attention on many occasions in the past. We have mental health and drug-related issues in the background of this particular person.”
One post on Gargasoulas’ Facebook noted only days before:
“ ‘I DECLARE WAR ON TYRANNY TODAY YOU DOGS WILL HAVE THE OPTION TO EITHER BELIEVE IN ME AND HIS POSITIVE ENERGY HE OFFERS AND STAY FAITHFUL TO ME OR SERVE THE ONE WHO ENSLAVES YOU AT HIS FEET I OFFER FREEDOM NO WORK NO BILLS JUST THAT WE ALL KEEP FAITH AND BELIEVE IN THE ONE GOD THE ONE HIGHER BEING BEING FOR THE GOOD AND PROTECT THE ENERGY THAT HE GIVES WITH YOUR HEART GOD BLESS EVERYONE IN THE WORLD IT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE XOXO’.
However, this is being treated as another case of a deranged man with a history of drug abuse and violence who will quote anything to exacerbate the impact of his deadly carnage.

I see exactly 2 possibilities:
– either the media are claiming that believing in Islam turns people into madmen
– or all those “madmen” are just faithful followers of Islam
Take your pick…
