Rush Limbaugh once infamously ranted about “the browning of America” – outraged over the number of interracial couples walking around society. Now in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of non-white babies born in America now represent the majority of births in the United States. Information that is sure to frighten and enrage racists the world over.
Early in 2015, it was reported that nonwhites were expected to represent the majority of the nation’s children by 2020, but just 13 months later it appears this prediction has already come to fruition. As of July 1, 2016, the number of “babies of color” ages 1 year and under, now represent 50.2% of all births in the United States – the new majority of the country.
As NPR has reported, statistics like this are usually delayed for a few years, as a it takes a long time for the Census Bureau to update, analyze and ultimately revise data. Therefore it is estimated that this new majority may have actually occurred sometime around 2013. Meaning the new generation of children is set to be entering preschool and American school systems for the first time.
These statistics aside, 2014-2015 marked the first time in United States history that there were more minority students enrolled in schools than whites. Combine these two pieces of data and there is no doubt that the paradigm of America is shifting – hopefully for the better.
As racism slowly fades away and the number of nonwhites will now represent the new majority of society, future generations will have no choice but to redefine the course of civil rights. For the first time in history, nonwhites can abandon the societal crutch of labeling themselves as a ‘minority’ and work towards fulfilling their own interests – prospering in the process.
Here are some other interesting statistics from the latest Census data:
- By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans is projected to be 65 and over
- The history ‘minority population’ is projected to rise to 56 percent of the total in 2060, compared with 38 percent in 2014
- By 2060, the nation’s foreign-born population will reach nearly 19 percent of the total population, up from 13 percent in 2014
- The “two or more races” population is projected to be the fastest-growing over the next 46 years
