George Lucas, the man who directed the trilogy of Star Wars sequels, debuted with THX 1138, one of the most visually striking visions of the future in movies, in 1971. THX 1138 depicts rich detail of future world – a stark, creepy future of brow beaten, shaven-headed citizens who are coded rather than named, and its clinically white subterranean city.
Merging Nineteen Eighty-Four with Brave New World, Lucas’ film pits a sensitive character (Robert Duvall as a man whose mind and body are controlled by the government) against a powerful state, an unsettling world where everything is awfully wrong, thoughts are controlled, freedom is impossibility, and love is the ultimate crime.
On Blu-ray, THX 1138 looks stunning despite the fact it was shot more than 40 years ago.
