Patrick Ewing saved many lives, including that of a toddler, after 62-year-old Thomas McCary, wielded two guns and opened fire in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 26.
According to the Police, McCary (pictured below) and Ewing’s sister, Jeaneta Walker, were having a heated argument at around 7.30 p.m. outside an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Holland Drive. When Ewing tried to solve the issue, McCary pulled out a .38-caliber handgun and shot at Ewing three times at around 8 p.m.
A brave Ewing, who has a concealed carry license and a gun to boot, then decided to take matters into his own hands. He pulled his self-defense pistol out and shot at McCary three times, hitting him once in the leg. McCary went into his house and re-emerged with another handgun. With a gun in each hand, he fired shots at three other people, including Walker’s 1-year-old son. During the incident, the cops were nowhere to be seen.
According to court documents, Ewing continued to shoot at McCary “in an attempt to divert his attention away from his relatives.” McCary fired several more rounds and then retreated into his apartment. He was arrested at around 2:30 a.m and taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center to be treated. He was later released and booked into the jail at around 3:30 a.m.
McCary is being held without bond in Hamilton County jail, and is charged with four counts of felonious assault. Patrick Ewing was not charged.
According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, there were 391,816 concealed carry permit holders in Ohio as of July, 2014. Residents with concealed carry permits have reportedly jumped by as much as 50 percent in 2015.
