Female Student Cyber-Bullied For Expressing Opinion On “Check Your Privilege” Board

A student at Appalachian State University says she was cyber-bullied after she posted a picture of a “Check Your Privilege” bulletin board.

Memes on the board depicted cases of apparent white privilege, heterosexual privilege, Christian privilege, and able-bodied privilege, among others.

The female student named Laurel Littler had objected to the board’s apparent attempt at “shaming others”, so she posted a photo of it on her Facebook page. She was surprised to receive some harsh responses.

Campus Reform picked up her post… and after that, she says she claims to have been the victim of “tons of cyber-bullying.”

“I read that because I’m white, I had never experiences oppression before, so I deserved the cyber-bullying. It hurt at first, but after a while, I just realized these people don’t know who I am and if they really do want to know my opinion, they’re more than welcome to talk to me in person,” Littler told Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

I have to ask: is a Black Christian more or less privileged than a White Muslim? The irony is that almost everyone benefits from a privilege, or suffers under a prejudice. Rather than being humbled at that fact, people have decided to conduct an online lynching of a person who was only expressing an opinion. Rightly or wrongly, there was no need to attack her personally. And rightly, she was questioning the morality of using shame as a tool against a group of people.

The “privilege” board was put up by a resident assistant at the dormitory after three University of San Francisco professors started the “Check Your Privilege” campaign last fall.

The R.A. reportedly does not plan to take it down.

Littler said she doesn’t want the board to be taken down, but posted it on Facebook out of a concern over the message.

The common thread among ALL the atrocities, ALL the bias and ALL the suppression of minorities in the world is the fact that a group of people had decided that they were superior and that another group was inferior and had to be silenced. An innocent sense of morality would quickly morph into self-righteous indignation, which would then turn into a blind and unquestioning ideology.

Don’t give in to the temptation to become a worse human being than the ones who you believe are suppressing you.
