Kevin Woodrum, a former Boone County West Virginia Sheriff’s deputy, was arrested this week after he allegedly beat, burned and attempted to waterboard his wife. He has been charged with malicious wounding, sexual assault, kidnapping, strangulation, domestic battery and domestic assault.
State troopers were dispatched to a disturbance at Woodrum’s home. He responded to the door, but initially refused to allow them to enter without a warrant. Eventually, Woodrum allowed them to enter where they found the victim, Woodrum’s wife. According to the troopers, they could see that she had been beaten, as she had visible bruising to her face. The victim advised the troopers that she had been held captive and beaten for hours.
Woodrum tied his wife to a bed, choked, slapped and then burned her. He even water-boarded her by pouring water on her face as she was tied down. He cut off much of her hair. According to the victim’s family, Woodrum had abused her for years, however, this incident was the worst of it. Due to the fact that Woodrum’s wife is a sexual assault victim, her name has been withheld from reports.
Woodrum was only an officer for just over two years before leaving police work entirely. There is little information available on Kevin Woodrum. What we can gleam from this incident, is the fact that people who are drawn to police work are also statistically more prone to having incidents of domestic violence in their home.
Woodrum’s case isn’t unique. As of 2014, 50% of all women married to a police officer experience domestic violence during their relationship. Families of cops are 2-4 times more likely to become victims. The numbers are suspected to be much higher in reality, as many women involved in violent relationships with police officers are afraid to report it, usually out of fear that the officer will lose their job.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office, where Woodrum was employed, has not yet made a statement on this matter – and it’s unlikely they will. Woodrum’s wife was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for numerous injuries related to her ordeal. Woodrum was taken to Southwestern Regional Jail where he is being held without bond.
