Google May Be Forced To Reveal Its Algorithm

17

The internet’s largest search engine provider, Google, has been asked to reveal its secret search algorithm — soon, the very core of Google may not be a secret anymore. In France, there is a law under consideration that would push the search engine leader (and all search engines) to unveil its greatest possession — the algorithm. The Financial Times has stated that the French federal government is creating a policy in the French Senate that could potentially force Google to release the information regarding the technique it utilizes to rate internet websites and display search results.

The Upper House of the French Senate is expected to pass the law soon that would allow the French National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to keep an eye on Google’s search and ranking practices. Recently, the Wall Street Journal circulated an article that laid out challenging accusations of the French Federal Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’s incompetence in testing Google for its ‘unjust’ lookup formula. Adding to this, is the fact that the functions of their search ranking algorithms have already shown they provide reasonable and nondiscriminatory outcomes. Google has the majority share of the search industry in France, and although this new law is not aimed at Google alone but ALL search engines, it does appear to be directed straight at Mountain View and Google.

“The authorities are well informed of the issues. It is a concern of guaranteeing fairness. [To] Too many businesses Google is viewed as bottleneck. The net is securing around Google.” –Catherine Morin Desailly, the seat of the Senate’s Culture, Education and Communications committee.

On the other side of the nation, the European Union maintains its harshness towards Google and is likely to accuse the lookup engine of dishonestly promoting its very own services. This step might damage Google in a big way and Google, obviously, is not too happy about it.

Financial Times further writes that this step must be observed, increasing bitterness for Silicon Valley in the European Union. In the past, American-based tech companies have been accused of taxation larceny, unethical business practices and much more. One of the most intriguing cases, was the idea of being ‘forgotten’ (or ‘removed’ from the web) which required Google to create an option for the people wanting to be forgotten.

As previously mentioned, Google’s search engine algorithm is the core of Google, and they will most certainly be trying to find a way to avoid this law. This particular algorithmic rule is the secret to its popularity and impact. It is not clear how Google will respond just yet, but if they are unable to evade the law then they might very well cease search capabilities in France, the way it did in Spain last year as a result of some limitations.

    • They will just shut down Google in France and then all people in France are upset that google isnt in their own language anymore. And then they will protest against there government.

      • This is not as simple as you seem to think.
Actually, there isn’t only one search provider. But they are force as fisrt choice in browsers. So people mainly use it.
There is some very nice alternative and if it happened that Google Search is blocked (not the business part which works a lot in France) there will be a strong communication to use alternatives like duckduckgo which either protect your privacy and gives you results.

      • Ok, First of all why do you people have to show how stupid you are? If we continue to allow big businesses to do what they want and have no rules, than how can we expect to have a fair and just life? How many times do big businesses get away with pretty much murder and we do nothing to curb their abuses of law and order at the expense of regular people like us and those regular people keep coming to the defense of business. It’s way past time to implement laws to protects us all as a whole not just those that wealthy and think they are above everything. DAMN IT PEOPLE WAKE THE HELL UP!!!

        • When i have made something i dont want to show everyone the source code because it took alot of work and money and i dont want them to have it for free so i can better sell it if i am forced to reveal the source…

Also i never saw a business get away with murder.

First off all i hate the world as it is. But i just hope everyone dies then a new generation does it better than we did.

        • Why would a company like google kill people?? Google are building THEIR OWN self-driving car (better security and less crashes on the road( and death)), not a terminator.
If you build an AI (Artifactual Intelligens), and it turns out later it is a pretty good one, would you so give it away for free?
If you are that clever enough to build something big out of nothing, should you then not have rights to at least keep it for yourself?

    • There does seem to be some confusion there — federal government, the upper house of the senate (the senate *is* the upper house of the French parliament), and then mixing things up with the EU (“on the other side of the nation”???). Makes you wonder if there is any substance in the rest of the article.

  1. Google will have there mega super computer scan the internet and all information regarding this, and it will make a recommendation for Google based on its state of the art predictive scanning and pattern based computing. So if Google leaves France, it will probe be better for Google for the future or if it reveals its core, then you know Google knows it will still be the top 1 in the future. I predict Google will say screw France. No one has been able to hack or leak Google’s secret search algorithm, and why would Google release it, knowing it could get out to other search engines. Plus in say 10 years France may allow Google back, so then Google only lost 10 years in France and still have there secret search algorithm. This is like France demanding KFC or Pepsi to reveal there secret recipe or else they ban them, now we all know what these company’s would do, they’d say “bye”.

    • you do not understand, you are naive as large which has been brainwashed. You are totally paranoid and very pretentious.
If we ask the recipes or how does the google search engine, or the way certain products are manufactured, from institutions or the French Government, it is only for consumer safety and protection private life.
France to afford to do a google or a KFC or McDonalds and surely better than their American version if she wished.

  2. why dont they just shut the fuck up why would anyone tell them the secret of their popularity and they cant just force them the owners of google has the right to keep the search engine a secret and i dont care what others say cause its TRUE!!! forcing someone to tell his secret of popularity is like stealing an idea of someone else
