31-year-old Brian Fields is battling for his life at Mount Sinai Hospital after he was brutally gunned down in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, while he was live-streaming on Facebook. Chicago Police Officer Thomas Sweeney told BuzzFeed News that on March 31, shortly before 5 pm, the shooter walked up to Fields, fired multiple shots, and fled in a vehicle.

Fields’ chilling Facebook video shows him talking about a store behind him, which was recently reopened for kids. “They heard I was out here so they had to open the store up for the kid. You know what I mean; I can’t be out here without the store being open. I need somewhere to duck and hide,” he said jokingly seconds before the first shots sounded.
After being hit by several bullets, he dropped his phone, but the camera continued to roll, facing upwards. The recording shows the shooter stepping over the phone and firing more shots before running off. After a brief pause, a woman can be heard screaming: “Oh my god, no…I can’t believe this.” Fields suffered bullet wounds to his jaw, back, stomach and legs.

Chicago Police Department’s chief spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, has said police are exploring two possible motives — if the shooting was gang-related, or perhaps a retaliation for the victim’s second-degree murder conviction in 2009.

2016 is turning out to be the most violent start to the year for Chicago, since 136 homicides were recorded in 1999. According to the Chicago Police Department, 141 people had been killed by March 31. The 141 deaths in the first three months of the year mark a 71.9% jump from the same period in 2015, when 82 people were killed. The number of shootings in the first quarter of 2016 jumped from 359 in 2015, to 677 in 2016, an 88.5% increase. With an average of three killings every two days, Chicago would have 564 homicides by the end of the year – and eclipse the 468 killings recorded in 2015.

You hear about all the gun violence in Chicago on the news, but you don’t really feel the reality of it until it happens so close to home.
