Greek Coast Guard Tries To Make Refugee Boat Sink – Turkish Coast Guard Rescues Them

15

In the aftermath of the Paris attacks, a surge of anti-refugee sentiment has washed over Europe.  In recent months, and especially in the aftermath of the attacks that left hundreds dead and injured in Paris, the sentiment seems to rising in strength. The Turkish Institute of Public Diplomacy has recently released a video showing what appears to be a man from the Greek coast guard maliciously acting on this emotion.

In the video, a Greek coast guard member apparently makes an attempt to sink a boat in the Aegean Sea crossing from Turkey to Greece. The boat is full of refugees. The man reaches across the rail of his vessel with a long lance and continually pokes at the small inflatable dinghy-like rubber boat. The scenario unfolding is obviously terrifying for those on the boat who reach out for the lance to stop him, which he continues as the refugees scream. The Greek boat finally leaves the refugees on their sinking dinghy until the Turkish coast guard arrives and conducts a rescue. The video was reportedly recorded on November 12.

A very similar incident occured just a month ago, when Greek coastguard rescued 242 migrants as boat sinked, three drown. Now the question comes up, was the Greek coastguard trying to sink that boat, too?

A similar incident also occurred in August, only a few miles from the Greek islands Kos and Lesbos. On this occasion, it was a fisherman who came to the rescue the refugees floating in the water.

In the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, the world has witnessed a mass migration of over 50 million people from their homes in the Middle East and Africa, trying to escape the violence.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 2015 has seen over 3,100 refugees have died while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea.

  1. Europe, close the borders! They are not refugees, but invaders. Jews are sending millions of military age men to our countries going to kill, rape and assault us. Defend our people against the hordes of third-world!

  2. People need to realize that refugees are not the instigators of violence. They are innocent people who’s lives had been destroyed and require people with an ounce of humanity to save them. Refugees are not terrorists, they are not ISIS. They are innocent people running from the exact same thing we are. It is a sad day on planet Earth when we would rescue a scraggly dog off the streets in pity, but would spit in the face of a starving man and his family.

  3. Why the hell are the Turkish coastguard following these boats over, they are actually helping them get to Greece. You wonder why things are getting tense. If Turkey did its job and stopped the Evil gangs who are filling these boats and putting people in danger then it wouldnt happen. Turkey are just as much in the firing line and has the refugees (terrorists whatever) blood on their hands. Greece cant cope with the influx so stop allowing it to happen.

  4. I’m not sure what to think, if I had my way, I would build cities for the refugees. But that’s me as a bleeding heart. I hope they find a home soon, someplace safe. Free from prejudice.

  5. The story was retracted by the Huffington Post already (and others). It is a boat hook that HELPS to bring a boat closer to the Coast Guard ship, all Coast Guards in the world use it according to experts. Please retract your story, it is irresponsible journalism to say the least. The Greek Coast Guard saved 90,000 refugees from the sea this year, and received a U.N. humaritarian award. Greece with a population of 10 million accepted 650,000 migrants, and refugees this year only. This misinformation has to stop.

  6. Even a novice nautical student knows that’s a boat-hook, it’s used to pull a boat closer to secure 2 vessels together. Don’t buy into Turkish BS, they use ever opportunity they get to slander Greece and the rest of Europe.

  7. The Greek coast guard recently responded to the allegations made by the Turkish authorities. In a statement, they said:

    1. The Hellenic Coastguard categorically denies the articles in the foreign press, as well as the doctored audiovisual material on a foreign website, according to which a Hellenic Coastguard vessel allegedly tried to sink a boat carrying refugees. Moreover, we obviously deny any effort by members of the crew to draw near to their large vessel a small inflatable craft by using a nautical hook (that is, a tool used in accordance with international shipping technique and practices for this purpose) while a nearby Turkish coastguard vessel assisted the rescue operation by lighting and facilitating all of the actions with a spotlight.

    2. We believe it to be at the very least contradictory to allege that the Hellenic Coastguard supposedly follows such practices, which are incompatible with the values of our culture and which are condemnable at a time when the Hellenic Coastguard, from early 2015 until today, has saved some 90,000 refugees from the sea in Search and Rescue operations.

    3. We also categorically deny that there was an exchange of relevant dialogue between the Heads of the Coastguards of Greece and Turkey, as presented in articles in the Turkish press.
