In 2017, Canada will turn 150. To celebrate, Parks Canada is offering all prospective annual pass holders a deal: purchase a 2016 Discovery Pass and it won’t expire for 24 months.

Did you know? In 2017, Canada will turn 150 years old. To celebrate the landmark achievement, the country’s new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has brought forward an initiative for all of Canada’s national parks to waive their entrance fee for the entire year of 2017.

The Huffington Post reports that prospective annual pass holders who buy a discovery pass in 2016 won’t have to renew their pass until 2018.

That means, if you purchase your pass this year, you’ll get access to over one hundred national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas for free in 2017.

Reportedly, one annual adult pass costs $67.70. Family and group passes are priced at $136.40. Seniors pay $57.90 and youths, $33.30.

The offer comes after Trudea’s mandate letter to Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, stated that the government would “make admission for all visitors to National Parks free in 2017, the 150th anniversary of confederation.”

Not only that, the mandate outlined that beginning in 2018, admission for children under 18 years of age would be free, and any adult who is new to Canada within the last 12 months would also receive a free year of free admission. (That means refugees will get a free pass to explore the outdoors, as well)

Hopefully, this initiative will prompt more Canadians to get outside and explore the wonderful planet we live on.
