Seven inmates were put into solitary confinement for making a music video and posting it on WorldStarHiphop. Once authorities found out, they launched a full investigation and gave the inmates involved, a combined 20 years in solitary confinement.
According to the posting, the inmates were punished for: “Assisting with a social media site and having a contraband cellphone.”
It has also been reported that they have lost years’ worth of family visitation rights and also their phone privileges, making it difficult to maintain family ties to the outside world. The quick Facebook clip outlining the circumstances to this has noted that the South Carolina Prison has a history of harsh punishment involving “years of solitary,” especially in relation to social media offences.
The United Nations has engaged in calls to end solitary confinement after studies have shown lasting mental harm.
