Italian Town Switches To Silent Fireworks To Protect Animals

The town of Collecchio in Italy has passed legislation which forces citizens to use silent fireworks.
Humans may enjoy the ruckus that accompanies celebrations like the 4th of July, but animals – including domesticated pets – can become traumatized by the loud explosions. In fact, some of the symptoms caused by “acoustic stress” include heart problems, nausea, tremors, debilitating fears, and light-headedness.

Because most animals are far more sensitive to noise than humans, an entire town in Italy is taking action to protect local animals from the stress caused by fireworks displays.

Travel.Excite.co reports that the government of the town of Collecchio in the province of Parma, Italy, has introduced new legislation which forces citizens to use silent fireworks. The mandate aims to ensure that local wildlife is respected and that the stress experienced by animals is lessened substantially.

One of the companies benefiting from the new law is Setti Fireworks, which provides fireworks that produce a spectacular light show without the deafening sounds. Reportedly, the company designs their fireworks to fit the venue and event they will be used for.

Should similar legislation be passed elsewhere? Please comment your thoughts below and share this news!

  1. Although it doesn’t surprise me that Italians passed such a law because they are very fond with protecting the animals (the legislation in Italy is in general, very tough for those who use violence on animals. I know this because I lived there for 3 years), I am surprised about that they took it this far :).
I personally find it a good initiative.
And good luck in business for the company that had the great idea to make those fireworks.

  2. This is a good start. The ultimate aim is for “private” firework displays to become a thing of the past, with everyone who wants to able to attend a (preferably noise-free) professional display in their local area. This not only protects animals but humans (particularly small ones) as well (I’m considerably less bothered with protecting humans…). It’s not only the noise that does damage – animals can be burned or otherwise injured… Those ridiculous Chinese lanterns that nouveau Roche wannabes regard as part of any celebration can cause horrible burns on unsuspecting horses, cows, sheep etc in nearby fields. But it’s a good start ?

  3. I think it is a great idea – not only for the animals but people t00.Many people are unsettled by the extreme loudness (me included) of modern firework explosions! The lights are beautiful but the loud bangs are unnecessary in my opinion.
