Will Smith was at first surprised to see Jackie Chan emptying his half-consumed glass of water onto a potted plant during a dinner party he hosted at his Los Angeles home recently. When the Rush Hour star explained the Men In Black actor that he was trying to save water, Smith was inspired. “Jackie, from now on, my whole family wants to learn this,” Smith told Chan.
This wasn’t the first time he set an example on water conservation for celebrities to emulate. Once, while he was dining outdoors in Beverly Hills at a table near Jay Z, he did his usual post-meal ritual – dumping a half-consumed glass of water onto a nearby plant. When a curious Jay Z asked what he was doing, Chan explained his mission. “Jay Z said, ‘Ok, I have to learn from that’. I believe I inspire a lot of people,” Chan recalled.
In 1988, Chan established the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, which provides scholarships and help for Hong Kong’s young people. Later, the foundation expanded its activities to support disaster relief, medical care and art performance. “Even when I am sleeping, I think how I can help other people,” Chan, a UNICEF and UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, once said. He founded the Dragon’s Heart Foundation in 2004 to fulfil the desperate needs of children and the elderly in remote areas of China. Chan said, “One day I hope we won’t have any poor people in China.”
Chan is also an ambassador for the US charity WildAid and is discouraging consumers in China, world’s biggest market for ivory and other illegal wildlife parts, from buying products made from poached tigers and rhinos. “I just love animals, I don’t know why. I am tough but I have a pretty good heart,” he told the Guardian.
