Leaders will be “Lauded or Vilified,” DiCaprio addresses the UN

Leonardo DiCaprio shows no signs of letting up on his campaign to better the world for future generations. The Hollywood actor, who makes more headlines in his environmental crusades these days than his films, has given the United Nations an unwavering and unforgiving lecture.

As Indonesia threatens to ban this outspoken actor from their country, DiCaprio fronted the UN on Friday, urging world leaders to put their money where their mouth is.

“You will either be lauded by future generations or vilified by them,” DiCaprio stated at the UN ceremony where 171 nations lined up to sign the landmark accord. A chilling call for the future, not incorrect in assumption.

“We can congratulate each other today, but it will mean absolutely nothing if you return to your countries and fail to push beyond the promises of this historic agreement.”

It isn’t the first time DiCaprio has addressed the UN, and he welcomes the Paris agreement. However, he urged the leaders to be cautious in their complacency and asked for a “collective conscience” and “massive change.”

“After 21 years of debates and conferences, it is time to declare no more talk, no more excuses, no more ten-year studies, no more allowing the fossil fuel companies to manipulate and dictate the science and policies that affect our future.”

The eloquent speaker drew chamber applause. “Our planet cannot be saved unless we leave fossil fuels in the ground, where they belong.”

“Look at the delegates around you,” DiCaprio said. “It is time to ask each other what side of history will you be on.”
