Lego, the world largest—and possibly most loved— toy company, is planning to replace the plastic in their products with a “sustainable material” by 2030. To achieve this, the company will be investing 1 billion DKK in their new LEGO Sustainable Materials Centre in Denmark. According to reports, Lego plans to hire “over 100 specialists within the materials field during the coming years to work on this challenging ambition.” The company believes its team will discover an alternative material by 2030.

The CEO and President of the LEGO Group,  Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, states that, “This is a major step for the LEGO Group on our way towards achieving our 2030 ambition on sustainable materials,”

He continues, “We have already taken important steps to reduce our carbon footprint and leave a positive impact on the planet by reducing the packaging size, by introducing FSC certified packaging and through our investment in an offshore wind farm. Now we are accelerating our focus on materials.

Lego uses more than 6,000 tons of plastic annually to manufacture the colorful bricks we all know and love, according to NBC News. The company hopes to inspire future generations of builders with its sustainable material efforts, and aims to leave a positive impact on the planet.

Our mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow. We believe that our main contribution to this is through the creative play experiences we provide to children,” Lego Group owner Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen said in a statement. The investment announced is a testament to our continued ambition to leave a positive impact on the planet, which future generations will inherit.

If all goes to plan, the company plans to open the new LEGO Sustainable Materials Center sometime this year.

    • When considering just a few variables required for this you can understand their time to make this the right choice. Sustainability, eco-friendly, non-toxic for all toddlers, light weight, easy to produce, durable and the list goes on. Testing will take forever. They will probably have 5 products ready in the next 2 years but then 10 years of testing.
