Some local residents of the city of London, United Kingdom, have been caught on camera stealing water meant for runners who competed in the just ended April 24th London Marathon event.
The incident happened precisely at Deptford, south east London. The water for the event was stationed at Deptford, and about 20 people were seen making away with the water.
The London Marathon is a long-distance (26-mile) running event held in London as part of the World Marathon Majors. The event was first held in 1981 and has since been held in the spring of every year.
According to the organizers of the event, the residents raided the water station soon after the runners began the marathon through the city. The thieves were secretly filmed by somebody who was there to witness the event.
Both adults and children were seen in the video scrambling for the free water, which were in bottles. One man was even seen using a trolley to transport the water to this home. It looked like he planned from his house to steal the water, and not to watch the marathon.
The organizers of the marathon said the incident is shameful and disappointing, and that full investigations have been launched into the incident.
The man who filmed the incident was quoted by the Sun as saying “I find it absolutely disgusting, absolutely appalling. I don’t know why they would do that. Why would you go crazy – like animals – and steal all the water? I think it’s absolutely vile behavior.”
Director of the London Marathon Events, Hugh Brasher said the water was left in the care of volunteers, and that volunteers were advised not to stop people if they take some of the water, due to the possibility of it marring the event.
“These water stations are staffed by volunteers and we are very grateful to them for their work on race day. It’s very disappointing to see water being stolen in this way from the official water stations for our runners. We always brief our volunteers not to get into altercations if this kind of thing happens. We will investigate this further,” Brasher.
The video of the incident was uploaded on the Internet. It went viral on social media, with many viewers expressing anger over the incident. Some viewers described the incident as shameful, saying the thieves have disgraced the city.
The London Metropolitan Police have also confirmed the incident, however, have said no arrests have been made so far.
Despite the water being stolen by local residents, the event came to a successful end. In the women’s category, Jemima Sumgong survived a shocking fall, but did well to take the first place after being aided by a spectator.
More than 37,000 runners reportedly took part in the marathon. The Kenyan Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge emerged as the winner of the men’s category, defending his 2015 title.

Some run for fun and others steal water to survive. Welcome to planet Earth.
They actually took the water after the runners had passed. So it was at the side of the road where it would have been picked up and dumped. A very badly researched article. Taken from a right wing Murdoch owned gossip rag. Can’t believe you put crap like this on here. Poor show you do some great work but this is rubbish.
