Officer’s Bodycam was Turned Off When He Shot and Killed a Man

26-year-old Ty Worthington was killed last week by Salt Lake City, Utah police, and now the unnamed officer who killed him is saying his body camera was ‘not on’ during the situation.

According to a local news article, “the department is currently testing and evaluating three kinds of body cameras. Because of short battery life, they are not turned on for “routine” calls.”

The officer who shot him is on administrative leave, or paid vacation.

Officer Sam Winkler of the South Jordan Police Department said “The officer confronted Mr. Worthington in a horse corral, and during the confrontation multiple shots were fired,”

Ty showed up to the house of family members after being kicked out of their place, and they called the police on him.

He then ran into a neighbor’s yard, and was found hiding in a horse corral.  All we know is he was shot and killed, and the police allegedly recovered a small handgun ‘next to him’, while the officer’s camera was off.

This is likely to add to the debate over equipping cops with bodycams, which is coming into question following the filmed death of Eric Garner at the hands of police.

Please share this with anyone who could use some perspective on this increasingly relevant issue of police violence. This is how the incidents go; police do such things as have body cameras ‘not turned on’.

Someone was Indicted in the Eric Garner Killing…The Guy that Video Taped it

Ramsey Orta, the man who filmed the fatal incident on July 17, 2014 between NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, and Eric Garner, his friend and the now deceased man accused selling un-taxed cigarettes on a NYC street, went in front of a Grand Jury September 1, 2014. He was indicted on what he says were trumped up charges as retaliation for filming the incident for which Officer Pantaleo was not indicted.

According to the Huffington Post:

“Police alleged that Orta had slipped a .25 caliber handgun into a teenage accomplice’s waistband outside a New York hotel. Orta testified that the charges were falsely mounted by police in retaliation for his role in documenting Garner’s death, but the grand jury rejected his contention, charging him with single felony counts of third-degree criminal weapon possession and criminal firearm possession.”

Raw Story reported Orta stating in an interview with the Advance that he was also threatened at that time:

“When they searched me, they didn’t find nothing on me…and the same cop that searched me, he told me clearly himself, that karma’s a b*tch, what goes around comes around,” Orta said, adding later, “I had nothing to do with this. I would be stupid to walk around with a gun after me being in the spotlight.”

DEA: Cartels Are Smuggling High-Grade US Cannabis Into Mexico

Written by: John Vibes at theantimedia.org

According to the DEA, marijuana trafficking in North America has done a complete turn-around, with Mexican cartels now importing high quality American weed into Mexico.

In the past several years, as marijuana laws have loosened up in some states, the low quality wild cannabis that is grown in Mexico has lost demand in America now that there is a better more meticulously grown product available.

For the past few years local marijuana has actually become the dominant product on the market. The Mexican cartels must have noticed this business trend, so they quickly decided to start bringing the more popular product home to Mexico.

The DEA seems to be putting this issue forward as an argument against drug legalization, but if drugs were legal on both sides of the border, it would not matter where they were being transported.

A report on NPR suggested that the cartels were actually stealing the marijuana to then sell back home, but there has been no proof to substantiate these claims.

Oddly enough, the Mexican government isn’t concerned with this issue, as a vast majority of the countries in the world including Mexico, would actually prefer for drugs to be legal. Unfortauntely, the strict drug policy in the United States has been implemented worldwide through the United Nations, with a few small exceptions.

Written by: EV

The Harry Potter Alliance has re-launched the ‘Odds in Our Favor’ social justice campaign. The group has created #MyHungerGames with the hopes that people will share their stories of struggle.

“#MyHungerGames aims to put action to those words. The Harry Potter Alliance is calling on the public to join the real-life District 13 — to hack the Hunger Games narratives, and to open up the pervasive personal narratives of the daily realities of income inequality in much the same way that the great #YesAllWomen did with the daily realities of misogyny.”

Their mission: The Harry Potter Alliance turns fans into heroes. We’re changing the world by making activism accessible through the power of story. Since 2005, we’ve engaged millions of fans through our work for equality, human rights, and literacy. hg4

Many Americans are tweeting their struggles, from choosing which day of the week they will not eat, to choosing whether to buy their own medications or their children’s. Walmart workers have joined in as well, using the iconic three-finger solute from the Hunger Games film—a series set in a future dystopia where the poor live at the whims of a powerful ruling class.
