DARPA uses oculus rift for cyber defence.

Unbenannt

DARPA (Defence advanced research projects agency) is using the oculus rift headset to create one of the most secure cyber defence networks yet.

The user will see a 3D interactive field and will see and interact with different parts of the defence system.

This version of the oculus rift will simplify some of the techniques that hackers often use, this will make it a lot easier for new recruits to learn the new techniques used with this device. DARPA believes that cyber terrorism has gone too far and hopes that the oculus rift will be able to sniff out major hackers. Programs like these are what show people how seriously cyber terrorism is actually taken.

Long term future plans for the software is possibly to implant it into contact lenses both taking the weight off of the users head and making the program much more hidden and secure, the DARPA also hope that new technology such as this will be seen a lot more often.

The headset is part of DARPA’s plan X, plan X is a project that DARPA has it has reached standards of the pentagon division, they focus on the experimentation of computer software to create new more secure programs to wage war against cyber terrorism and other types of hacking. Plan X is expected to run through 2017 but reporters say that the oculus rift technology won’t even be finished by then.

The user will see several spheres, each one will represent a different mission the user will choose one and it will pull up a series of actions needed to be preformed either to carry out a violent cyber attack or to defend from one. The programs interface looks very futuristic it looks much like something you would see from a sci-fi movie.

It is not unbelievable that this has become a reality, soldiers already use smart phones on the battlefield and want to use Microsoft’s Kinect to control their helicopters. Expect to hear more about DARPA’s program over the next few years as they start to improve how the software works and the oculus rift finishes with their development.

What the media doesn’t want you to know: What is REALLY happening in Iraq?

72

A massive crisis is happening in Iraq threatening to tear the country apart. Iraq is in conflict with itself. The sectarian differences between the Sunni, Shi’ites and Kurds divide the country. Iraq has never had a government that reflected the interests of all three. It has always been an artificial state held together by the politics. ISIS are marching through northern and central Iraq taking over cities as they go. If you want to know what’s really happening you’re in the right place. In this video we cover who is fighting, kurds and the KRG, Syria and The West.

Purchasing malware to victimize people is illegal by law, but if the same thing is done by a
government official, then it’s not! Yes, police forces around the world are following in the steps of
the United States’ National Security Agency(NSA) and the FBI.

Researchers from the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global affairs at the University of
Toronto and computer security firm Kaspersky Lab have unearthed a broad network of
controversial spyware, specially designed to give law enforcement agencies complete access to
a suspect’s phone for the purpose of surveillance.
The malware, dubbed as Remote Control System(RCS), also known as DaVinci and Galileo,
was developed by an Italian company known as the Hacking Team, and is available for desktop
computers, laptops and mobile phones. The latest version of the malware works on all versions
of all major mobile operating systems, like Android, Blackberry OS, iOS, Windows Phone and
Symbian, but is best suited for Android and can also be installed on jailbroken iOS devices.

The team of researchers from both Citizen Labs and Kaspersky Labs in collaboration have
presented their findings during an event in London. According to the report published, the
diameter of the infrastructure supporting Hacking Team(which sells the RCS to governments
and law enforcement teams) is very vast  with 326 commandandcontrol(C&C) servers
running in more than 40 countries.

MALWARE DEVELOPERS  HACKING TEAM

Hacking Team is a Milanbased IT company with more than 50 employees that has made a
totally different place for itself, selling “offensive” intrusion and surveillance software to
governments and law enforcement agencies, in “several dozen countries” over “six continents”.

“It was a wellknown fact for quite some time that the Hacking Team products included malware
for mobile phones. However, these were rarely seen,” said Kaspersky Lab experts in the blog
post. “In particular, the Android and iOS Trojans have never been identified before and represent
one of the remaining blank spots in the story.”
Kaspersky Labs have used a fingerprinting method to scan the entire IPv4 space and to identify
the IP addresses of the RCS C&C servers around the world and found the biggest host in the
United States with 64 counts of C&C servers. Next on the list was Kazakhstan with 49, Ecuador
with with 35, the United Kingdom with 32 servers and a host of other countries, all totalling to 326
C&C servers.

“The presence of these servers in a given country doesn’t mean to say they are used by
that particular country’s law enforcement agencies,” said Sergey Golovanov, principal
security researcher at Kaspersky Lab. “However, it makes sense for the users of RCS to
deploy C&Cs in locations they control – where there are minimal risks of crossborder
legal issues or server seizures.

ATTACK VECTORS AND MALWARE FEATURES

RCS can be physically implanted on the victim’s device via a USBflash drive or SD card, and it
can also be remotely installed through spearphishing, exploit kits, driveby downloads or
network traffic injection.
Once installed on iOS or Android devices, the new module enables governments or law
enforcement agencies to monitor the victim’s device, including the ability to

● control the phone network
● steal data from the device
● record voice email
● intercept SMS and MMS messages
● obtain call history
● report on the device’s location
● use the device’s microphone in real time
● intercept  voice  and SMS  messages  sent  via  applications  such  as Skype, WhatsApp,
Viber, and much more.

“Secretly activating the microphone and taking regular camera shots provides constant
surveillance of the target—which is much more powerful than traditional cloak and
dagger operations,” Golovanov wrote.

While the Android module is protected by an optimizer for Android called DexGuard, most of the
iOS capabilities mentioned above are also available for Android, along with support for hijacking
applications like Facebook, Google Talk, China’s Tencent and many more.

The mobile modules for each are custombuilt for each target, researchers said. from previous
disclosures, we’ve seen that RCS is currently being used to spy on political dissidents,
journalists, human rights advocates and opposing political figures.

Teenager builds browser plug-in that allows you to see the politicians’ funders

Here we go again, with another new useful tool to keep tabs on politicians. It is a

browser plug-in named “Greenhouse” and it lets users easily access information on

where our public servants get their campaign donations from.

Greenhouse gives a list of the top 10 industries from which a politician receives money.

Besides that, it also highlights what percentage of a politician’s funds come from presumably

grassroots supporters, those who make donations of 200 dollars or less.

The software launched in early June and it can already be

used for browsers Safari, Google Chrome and Firefox.

The creator of Greenhouse is a 16-year-old self-taught

programmer named Nicholas Rubin. He explains on his

website that “even though I am only 16 years old, not quite

old enough to vote, I am old enough to know that our

political system desperately needs fixing. I hope that this

tool is one step in that direction.”

Rubin says he got the name of his plug-in from a desire for

transparency, like the glass walls of a greenhouse. The 16-

year-old boy gives some insight into his own political

philosophy and mission:

It is my hope that providing increased transparency around the amount and source of funding of our elected representatives may play a small role in educating citizensand promoting change. If you use the extension when reading about a Congressional vote on energy policy, for example, maybe you’ll discover that a sponsor of a bill has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the oil and gas industry. Or maybe you’ll learn that the top donors to a member of Congress who opposes tort reform are lawyers and law firms. I use data from the last full election cycle (2012) and plan to update it as more relevant data becomes available. Special thanks to OpenSecrets.org for providing access to that data.

The motto of Greenhouse is: “Some are red. Some are blue. All are green.” What it signifies is that the influence of money on our government isn’t a partisan issue. Whether Democrat or

Republican, we should all want a political system that is independent of the influence of big money and not dependent on endless cycles of fundraising from special interests. The United States of America was founded to serve individuals, not big interests or big industries. Yet every year we seem to move farther and farther away from our Founders’ vision.”

Engadget, a technology blog, gives critique on the fact that Rubin’s data is a few years old. He replied that “the information in the popup is from the last full election cycle (ending in 2012) because it is the most complete data available.” Rubin gets his information from the Center for Responsive Politics Open Secrets website, which tracks lobbying and campaign contributions, and “plan[s] to update the data in the popup itself later in this election cycle as 2014 contributions are more complete.”
