Why is the Pentagon Training Medical Personnel for a Zombie Apocalypse?

At the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, military nurses working towards their doctorates are required to take course work related to “population health.” To keep things lively and get the students engaged, the Department of Defense utilizes a unique technique, offering a class studying various zombie apocalypse movies and scenarios – true story.

The goal is to teach students about population health planning and intervention,” according to Catherine Ling, an assistant professor and family nurse practitioner at the graduate nursing school. “The zombie coursework keeps the material interesting, and makes the lessons from the rest of the coursework more memorable.

To do this, the university creates a series of fictitious animated zombie scenarios, as well as video clips taken from some of the most popular zombie films, puts them together and asks the students how they would respond to the situation. “We use the narrative device of a zombie pandemic in animations and assignment to help engage students in content. The students watch video clips of scenarios, including one of the nation’s “president” delivering a brief “State of the Zombie Pandemic” address. They see the impact that a fictitious zombie virus has made on a population and the fear it has created – along with “anti-zombie” posters strewn all over cities.

Here is another example of some of the homework assignments from the class: Students are assigned to a fictional division of the Defense Department, called HHIT, and are asked how they would handle the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse through enacting quarantines, administering vaccines, and obtaining international resources – in accordance with Pentagon guidelines. “These scenarios reinforce teaching materials regarding various tools that shape population health planning and interventions. This skill set is critical in an era of increasing antibiotic resistance, emerging infectious diseases and pandemics such as Ebola and Zika

In 2015, Catherine Ling won the Sakai Innovation Award, which recognizes educators from institutions around the world for their excellence in teaching and learning, for her work creating the zombie training scenarios for Pentagon students.

This is not the first time the United States government has planned for a Zombie outbreak.

  1. I think this course has been named very badly if it has “zombie apocalypse” in the title. But from the information about the course listed, it does sound like the ideas are valid, for any kind of outbreak of highly contagious , terminal, incurable type disease.

It looks like it teaches general principles like quarantine, management etc.

I just have no idea why it was called zombie apocalypse training which would almost certainly have the idea written off before fair consideration.

The good news is pretty much everyone of my generation is already an expert in this field. 99% of my buddies will gladly go and get their handbook and settle down for hours of discussion on the matter.
