By now, most Americans know about healthcare coverage and the laws surrounding it. The healthcare.gov website is responsible for registration and selection of customers eligible under the Affordable Care Act. Healthcare.gov, however, is secretly sharing the personal data of its customers to the insurance marketers, which clearly violates the privacy of millions of Americans. This personal data includes: full name, salary, age, zip code and more details related to the customer’s health, like smoking status and pregnancy status. The IP addresses are also collected from the compromised data, which would help marketers to track or spy on particular customers. The Obama administration has reacted to this news, and denies that any such thing is taking place. But they do, at the same time, state that the data is being collected to improve the services of HealthCare.gov. Sen. Orrin Hatch commented, “This new information is extremely concerning, not only because it violates the privacy of millions of Americans, but because it may potentially compromise their security.”
Aaron Albright told the AP specifically that they, “are prohibited from using information from these tools on HealthCare.gov for their companies’ purposes.” The government uses them to measure the performance of HealthCare.gov so consumers get, “a simpler, more streamlined and intuitive experience.”
