It has emerged that a man lost his life after he stopped one of the bombers who bombed the commercial strip of the southern Lebanese capital from getting to where many people had gathered.

The attack which happened at the suburb of Burj al-Barajneh on November 12 left some 43 people dead. More than 200 people were also reportedly injured. The man has been identified as Adel Termos, a resident of Beirut.

According to the account of the story narrated by the local blogger Elie Fares, Termos was out with his young daughter in the area where the attack happened. As he stood there conducting his business, the first bomber detonated his explosive, causing mayhem and confusion. People started running to take cover at a safe place.

Then, a second suicide bomber moved towards where the people were running to take cover from the first blast. And suspecting that he is likely to be a suicide bomber, Termos rushed him. He brought him down immediately, forcing the suspect to detonate his explosive belt. The blast killed the bomber and Termos.

Termos has since been buried in his village, Tallussa in southern part of the country. Many mourners attended his funeral. Crowds chanted slogans as they carried his mortal remains through the streets of the village. Some people also carried his portrait.

That effort made by Termos prevented the bomber from getting to where the crowd had gathered, saving many lives who would have suffered from the second blast. Initially, it was unclear whether his daughter survived the attack. But pictures posted later on Social Media suggested she survived.

“He tackled him to the ground, causing the second suicide bomber to detonate. There are many families, hundreds of families probably, who owe their completeness to his sacrifice”, the Global Post quoted Fares as saying.

The area of the attack is said to be the stronghold of the Shia branch of Islam. The attack has been linked to the deep sectarian divisions on political lines in the ongoing Syrian Civil War.

Fares confirmed this assertion of the attack being linked to what is happening in Syria. He said “The Street is still divided by political and sectarian lines, but this time around the sense is that these are people, period. They’re dead because of something they had absolutely no role in … They died because of some demented, twisted politics.”

Lebanon shares territorial border with Syria, and hosts more than one million refugees throughout the region where the security situations have become volatile. The country has seen deadly spillovers from the Syrian Civil War since 2013. But it is said this particular attack took people by surprise.

Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. The group reported that a Palestinian and a Syrian had carried out the attack. In a post from an unspecified Twitter account, IS said “Let the Shia apostates know that we will not rest until we take revenge in the name of the Prophet.”

The Lebanese security forces have said they have arrested six suspects in connection with the bombings. They also said they are still pursuing other potential suspects.

Little is known about the sacrifice of Termos on Mainstream Media. Many on Social Media who have read about his heroism have urged people to spread what he has done. They have also urged for candle vigil to be held to remember him and those who lost their lives.
