An escaped 16-year-old child, raped numerous times by ISIS fighters, gave an account of life as a sex slave to jihadist extremists. Throughout her ordeal, she was fearful of becoming pregnant with the child of her abusers – a fear that her abductors shared ironically. Her rapists themselves did not want her to become pregnant, because although ISIS allows the rape of child sex-slaves…even monsters have to draw a line somewhere, it would seem.
“Every day, I had to swallow one in front of him. He gave me one box per month. When I ran out, he replaced it. When I was sold from one man to another, the box of pills came with me,” she said to the NY Times. She would later realize that she was being force-fed birth control pills.
The reason for this meticulous attention to pregnancy-prevention stems from ISIS’s “laws,” which dictate that a fighter can only rape slaves who are not pregnant. ISIS claims that the law comes from the time of the Prophet Muhammad, where sex slavery was (according to them) practiced. A pamphlet published by ISIS indicates that even children could be raped. Pregnancy is the only “defense” afforded to victims.
Therefore in order to perpetuate her rape, the slave must not ever be allowed to become pregnant. Never mind that the pill was a modern invention.
Three dozen escaped Yazidi sex slaves explained how the jihadists injected them with, and forced them to consume contraceptives. One was even forced into aborting her child, so that she could be raped again.
The Yazidi women would be tested for pregnancy whenever they were about to be sold to another ISIS rapist. The test would be bad news, and worse news for the women and girls, between being pregnant with their abuser’s child and being raped by another abuser.
Of the 700 escaped Yazidi rape victims who were treated in a UN-sponsored clinic, only 5% have become pregnant. The normal rate for young women is 20 to 25 percent.
An 18-year-old victim identified only as ‘J’ said she had been sold to the ISIS governor of Tal Afar.
“Each month, he made me get a shot. It was his assistant who took me to the hospital. On top of that he also gave me birth control pills. He told me, ‘We don’t want you to get pregnant,” she said. ‘J’ was then passed onto a lower ranking ISIS member.
“She told me, ‘If you are pregnant, we are going to send you back. They took me into the lab. There were machines that looked like centrifuges and other contraptions. They drew three vials of my blood. About 30 or 40 minutes later, they came back to say I wasn’t pregnant,’” she said.
A so-year-old girl identified as ‘H’ was pregnant at the time of her abduction. This saved her from rape…at first. However, she was eventually sold on to a man who raped her despite knowing the “illegality” of this type of rape.
“I was telling him: ‘I’m pregnant. In your book it says that you can’t do this.’ He had bloodshot eyes. He acted like he was high,” she said. He punched her in the stomach several times, and tried to persuade her into telling doctors that she wanted an abortion.
She would later escape though, and made it to safety with her unborn child with the aid of smugglers her family had hired.
