Russell Brand has made headlines after questioning the meaning of the one minute’s silence following the terrorist attacks that saw many lives lost in Tunisia at a holiday resort in Sousse. In Brand’s well-known The Trews, Brand discusses the situation in its entirety, along with other acts of terrorism, questioning the perpetuating political and economic environment, which perpetuates these situations.
The comedian’s comment that the minute of silence was ‘bullsh*t’ was taken out of context, to the point where one man, Rob, personally questioned Russel Brand on his meaning when he made this comment. The video was uploaded, where Rob is filmed stating to Brand that he lost two friends in the tragedy, challenging as to why Brand condemned the minute of silence as though he ‘didn’t give a toss’ about the British citizens who died.
The comic and outspoken activist responded in kind by saying to Rob that ‘our Government has a human rights abusers list where it says “these countries are dangerous, don’t go there, there is terrorists there” – then our actual Government helps arms companies sell to those countries.’
Explained in full, Brand elaborates on his opinions about the minute of silence as a disrespect to those who have lost their lives. ‘…Don’t do those gestures if you’re contributing to creating the situation that led to their death…’ stipulating that the truth behind the act of respect is ‘…an empty, futile gesture part of a general policy of bullsh*t so that our government can continue selling arms around the world and perpetuating a cycle where its own needs are met at the expense of its own citizens lives.’
After discussing the issue with Rob, Brand explained his stance and how the media and government falsely portray these situations, and also those who stand up and speak out against them. After shaking Brand’s hand, Rob was accepting and agreeable with the justifications.
The Trews segment was initiated by an email from a man who was at the hotel described how local Muslim workers rallied around tourists to defend and safeguard them from the gunman.
