Six African-American Women Died In Jail In July 2015, They Were All Held For Minor Offences

Statistics show that in July 2015, a total of six African-American women died strangely whilst in police custody across the United States; each of the six women had been arrested by the police for minor offences.

According to the RT English News, the majority of these deceased women had been in jail for no longer than two days. Currently, all of their deaths are under investigation by authorities.

The six women were identified as Sandra Bland of Texas, Kindra Chapman of Alabama, Joyce Curnell of South Carolina, Ralkina Jones of Ohio, Alexis McGovern of Missouri, and Raynetta Turner of New York.

In Texas, Sandra Bland was found dead in her cell after being arrested for a traffic violation on July 10. She had been in police custody for three days before her death.

The activist peace organization, CODEPINK has joined the DC Chapter of Black Lives Matter to deliver a petition with over 500,000 signatures to the Department of Justice, demanding a thorough investigation into the events surrounding Sandra’s arrest and death. Sandra was said to be driving from Illinois to Texas to start a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University, when she was arrested for switching lanes without a signal.

Raynetta Turner, 44, is said to be the latest African-American woman to die whilst in police custody. Her death was discovered in a Mt. Vernon, New York jail cell on Monday, July 27.

According to the ABC’s News affiliate Channel 7, Raynetta was arrested for shoplifting on Saturday, 25 July and taken to a local hospital after she notified officials of various health issues. It is said she was returned to her cell on Sunday and fingerprinted early Monday morning; she was found dead in her cell around 2 pm that same day. Authorities have said they are investigating her death.

Raynetta’s husband, Herman Turner, was quoted by the news channel as saying “All I know is my wife is dead and no one is saying anything.

Kindra Chapman, 18, is said to have committed suicide in an Alabama jail after being held for only two hours on July 14. She was arrested for allegedly stealing a cell phone in a shop. A coroner report has confirmed that she committed suicide.

28-year-old Alexis McGovern was also found lifeless on her bed at the St. Louis County Jail, after being confined to a Medical Infirmary on July 17.

Joyce Curnell, 50, was found dead on July 23 at the Charleston County Correctional Facility. Before being sent to jail, Joyce is said to have first gone to the hospital because of a medical issue. She too was arrested for shoplifting.

On 25 July, Ralkina Jones, 37, was taken into police custody after a domestic dispute with her husband. However, she was strangely found dead at the Ohio Jail just two days after her arrest.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), so far this year, more than 600 people have died after coming into contact with law enforcement agencies.

Matt Simpson, a senior policy strategist for the ACLU in Texas, told the Reuters News Agency, “Deaths in police custody are often associated with excessive force, medical neglect, or failure to prevent suicide, and they are more common than they should be.

    • Thats an ignorant response to this article. They’re disregarding our human rights, and abusing their power. The police force wad established for the people just like the supposed government, and they’re using their power to kill people who have already been locked up. Do you understand that they could lock you up for whatever the hell and do the same to you?

    • Dog bone that is actually thr dumbest thing ive ever heard like seriously did you even finish school? There are plenty of things on this world that you need but may not be able to afford ie you need food to live and you need water to live so what happens when you cant afford either? Well you dont all of a sudden stop needing them you absolute pleb.
