South Korea’s nuclear plant computer systems were breached in December, forcing the operators to re-evaluate their key infrastructure.
Officials noted that a leak in data had occurred, but that they were confident that it was ‘noncritical’ and any compromise to the security of the facility could be averted. “It’s our judgment that the control system is designed in such a way – there is no risk whatsoever,” the deputy energy minister stated. However, it has been acknowledged by the President of South Korea that the situation is unacceptable, with President Park Geun-hye ordering a complete inspection against cyber-terrorism.
The data leak involved the release of designs and manuals for two reactors and an estimation of radiation exposure for residents, among other documents. [1]
