Star Trek Sit Tight: Teleportation Just Became Real

0

Teleportation. Mind the pun, but it seems a world away and completely unrealistic to those on team cynical.

And yet, a group of scientists hold a different opinion, claiming to have successfully teleported an object into space.

The Chinese scientists claim they sent a photon from Earth to a satellite orbiting the planet over 300 miles away.

MIT review reported this is not the first time teleportation has been successful, but this latest endeavour has reached the farthest distance so far.

The research was conducted over a month, where scientists beamed millions of photons from their Tibetan ground station to a low-orbiting satellite. Results suggest success in over 900 cases.

“This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum Internet,” the team said in a press release.

In 2018, previous experiments conducted only showed a 1 percent success rate in teleporting photons.

Although the accuracy is still to be fine tuned, the science fiction of teleportation is no longer fiction. Kind of gives new meaning to the words “Beam me up, Scotty.”
