The White Supremacist who terrorized and wanted to take over a small town, Leith in North Dakota in 2012 is reportedly to have been going from place-to-place looking for where to settle.
The ABC News reports that Craig Cobb showed up in the town and went on a mission to take it over and turn it into an enclave for white supremacists.
The town’s Mayor, Ryan Schock narrated to the news channel how Cobb first arrived in the town some three years back.
“I actually met him the first day he moved in. He said he just wanted to live here and he said he might have some friends joining him now and throughout the next year or two”, Schock explained how Cobb first settled in Leith.
But according to Schock, Cobb lied. He only wanted to settle down before revealing his true motives to local residents. It is said Cobb soon clash with local residents on the subject of documentary entitled, Welcome to Leith.
At first, Cobb was said to seem like a lonely person because he had shown up by himself without a family. Schock said “I kind of felt sorry for him for a while, until I realized what his plan was”.
All this while, Ryan Lenz of the Southern Poverty Law Center has been tracking Cobb for years and said after he moved to Leith, he started posting his plans on an online message board frequented by racists News Network.
“He says that he’s purchased some properties and he’s encouraging others to come follow him, to join him, because this was going to be the vanguard of a movement. He was trying to turn it into a white homeland”, Lenz said.
Mayor Schock that by that time Cobb had purchased 12 to 14 lots and that was the time residents started expressing concerns about his actions.
“It was scary. He could of put one family for sure on each lot and would of had control of the town”, he said.
Cobb later invited the radical hate group, the National Socialist Movement to the town. Local residents started protesting and this drew media attention to the situation.
“They came in very strong, stating that they’re going to take the town over, they’re going to take the voting over. And if any one of us violates their First Amendment rights that they will have us arrested immediately. They were going to build the houses, set their church up”, the Mayor said.
But despite the protests, Cobb succeeded in moving in one family. He armed himself with weapons and with a friend, they shot video in which Cobb was seen saying “I’m one of the most famous racists in the world you son of a bitch”.
Residents said it was a difficult moment for them. Mayor Schock said “Just about for a whole year, we wouldn’t let our kids out of our sight because we never knew who was coming and going in the town. We finally sat down and we had a discussion with our kids and just to try to figure this out we thank God every day that we’re still alive.”
Cobb was eventually arrested in November 2013 and charged with terrorizing and menacing residents. He pleaded guilty to one felony count of terrorizing and was placed on four years probation. He has since moved to a new town called Antler, about 200 miles north of Leith. But when residents recognized him, they refused to welcome him. The town bought all the land for sale to keep Cobb from buying any of them. He is said to be now stranded and people are closely tracking his movements.
