Fact No. 1: Each year approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption in the world is lost or wasted. The global volume of food wasted per year is estimated to be 1.6 Gtonnes of primary product equivalents while the total wastage of edible part of food is 1.3 Gtonnes. Wastage happens at all steps of production, handling, storage, processing, distribution and consumption. The carbon footprint of food produced and not eaten is estimated to 3.3 Gtonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Fact No. 2: The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 805 million people in the world, or one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2012-2014.
