Before the presidential election in the United States, many of the billionaires in the country united firmly behind the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

They least expected that the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, would win. One of these billionaires who never expected a Trump win is Warren Buffet. Buffet is the Chief Executive of Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated, a multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The 85-year-old, considered to be the fourth-richest man in the world, formally endorsed Clinton in December 2015.

In August 2016, Buffet appeared on a Clinton campaign platform, lashing out at Trump for mocking an American Muslim family, who lost their son (Captain Humayun Khan) whilst he served in the United States Armed Forces in Iraq, 2004. The Khan family had appeared at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to campaign against Trump for his anti-Muslim views. This led Trump to respond in an ABC News interview, mocking the family for appearing at the DNC.

But Buffett said he has taken strong exception to Trump’s statement against the Khan family. “How in the world can you stand up to a couple of parents who lost a son and talk about sacrificing because you were building a bunch of buildings? Trump and his family have sacrificed nothing; building buildings is not sacrifice. I ask Donald Trump: ‘Have you no sense of decency, sir?’” Buffet said.

From thereon, of course Buffet became very critical of Trump. He even claimed that Trump was afraid to release his tax returns because of the fraud he has committed. He believed Trump is unfit to lead the United States.

However, after the election, Buffet appeared on CNN to share his opinion on the President-elect of the United States. Surprisingly, Buffet now has different views on the President-elect, quickly changing his tune.

During the interview, Buffett was asked by Poppy Harlow if he now supports Trump. Buffett answered “I support any president of the United States. It’s very important that the American people coalesce behind the president.”

Buffet said all Americans need a unified country, and that President-elect Trump deserves everybody’s respect. Buffett also explained why he wanted Clinton to be the next president. According to him, the most important reason about the election was choosing a person who will minimize the chances of weapons of mass destruction being used, revealing that Clinton has good qualities when it comes to temperament and judgment.

Buffet said having a prosperous country should mean that its resources are used by its people fairly. He said working people should be protected – to have a 40-hour work week. During the middle of the Great Recession, it is said Buffet wrote an opinion piece assuring Americans that things will turn around, despite the challenges. According to the United States Department of Labor, roughly 8.7 million jobs were shed from February 2008 to February 2010. GDP contracted by 5.1%, making the Great Recession the worst since the Great Depression. Buffett’s positive hope for the country during this period, saw him described as an ‘eternal optimist’.

When Buffet was asked if he is feeling optimistic about America under the leadership of Trump, he answered: “hundred percent.”

Buffett also pointed out that many Americans resented the wealth gap in the country, and that assisted with Trump’s triumph in the election. He admitted the message of Trump resonated with many Americans.

Buffet described Trump’s objective of growing the American economy by 4% as extraordinary, saying it will demand a significant effort. He emphasized the need to make sure the growth of the economy assists all Americans positively.

When it comes to stocks, Buffet said he wasn’t surprised to see a sustained increase in the market. He said that the concerns that stocks are likely to plunge, as an effect of a Trump win, were “silly.”

Buffet revealed the win of Trump has even made him wealthier than before. He reiterated his new commitment to support the President-elect of the United States.
