A UN working group has recently said, while visiting the US, that America should consider giving reparations to the descendants of slaves. The US government should also establish a national human rights commission, publicly acknowledging the fact that the slave trade was a crime against humanity.
The Experts on People of African Descent UN working group was on a fact-finding mission in the country, and met with African-Americans from cities like Baltimore, New York and Chicago.
It won’t be until September of this year when their full report is ready for release, but the members read a press statement which stated that they are “extremely concerned about the human rights situation of African Americans.”
Police brutality was of particular concern, comparable to the racial violence of the Jim Crow era according to the group’s Chairwoman, Mireille Fanon Mendes-France.
“The colonial history, the legacy of enslavement, racial subordination and segregation, racial terrorism, and racial inequality in the US remains a serious challenge as there has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent. Contemporary police killings and the trauma it creates are reminiscent of the racial terror lynchings in the past. Impunity for state violence has resulted in the current human rights crisis and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
“It’s very easy in the United States for African Americans to be imprisoned, and that was very concerning,” said one member of the UN group, South African Sabelo Gumedze.
The group also noted that the US lacked a “national system to track killings committed by law enforcement officials”, and that the war on drugs has “led to mass incarceration that is compared to enslavement, due to exploitation and dehumanization of African-Americans.”
Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have opposed reparations in the past, and Bernie Sanders has called it “divisive”, calling instead for improvements in infrastructure and to create jobs in poor areas.

why dont they concern themselves with the slave trade that is happening for real between some african countries and some muslim ones,or child marriges ,or female mutilation.there is a thriving slave trade going on right now,matbe they should focus on real human issues instead of historic ones.no one gave reporations to the chinese who workred in america as second class citizens,or the japenese in camps.it sounds like the un need an easy and safe issues to deal with, and justify their jobs.,not really work to make this a better place
Chinese and Japanese people weren’t kidnapped from their country and force into chattel slavery for 400yrs. Chinese and Japanese people get to come to this country, setup businesses with American Tax Dollars and get tax exemptions for 7yrs. Black Americans don’t have that luxury. Jews have been getting approx. 3.5 billion annually in foreign aid and reparation totaling 120 billion since 1949 for a Holocaust that had nothing to do with America. This country was built off the Backs of Black people and White people are still reaping the rewards of their ancestors who owned Slaves. Millions of Acres of land have been passed down generation to the Farmers and Land Developers of today. Wealthy White people with old money which translates to wealth built off the backs of Black Slaves. You say Black people shouldn’t receive reparations; I say to hell with you and your generations after you.
I happen to agree with you. Blacks need to man up and take responsibility for their own paths in life and quit blaming it on something that they never even seen in their lifetime.
What the hell about the enslaved Irish brought here at the same time and sold for far less than black slaves???? Just because your skin ins’t dark, does not mean you are not the descendents of slavery…and yes, here in the USA!! And, yes I’m Irish!!!

The Irish people were referred to Black Irish and We have had a harder time in the last 800+ years than most others.We were sent off to Australia,Britain America,India you name it as criminals,we were sent there!We have been oppressed alot harder than black people but we never broke. We demanded our Rights just like African Americans but yet we were denied harder. We worked the hard jobs of mining,building,farming and were abused as we worked. Even in today’s society we are seen as drunks but we have Established America for the most powerful country as it is. We survived famines, death ships, Wars, racial discrimination, Occupation, Massacres. Just read indept into our history and you will see we are hard fuckers. You can not knock us down. I disagree with reparations for anyone because nobody is still alive from the days of physical slavery, and the middle class would end up being the ones to pay the bill anyway. That being said, Africans were slaves for a relatively short period of time in the grand scheme of human history which has seen half of the cultures in the world enslaved at one time or another.
It makes perfect sense to take money from those NOT responsible and give it those NOT affected.
What do you mean not affected. Slavery just ended 149 yrs ago and Black people just got civil rights 48yrs ago. Black people in this country went for 248yrs of chattel slavery and 100yrs of Jim Crow Laws after that. My mother! drank from a colored fountain. White people had a 3 century head-start over Black people in this country and Black people are still dealing with the fallout over Slavery and Oppression put on them by this Racist White Establishment.
