J K Rowling, The Activist, Continues To Cast Her Magic

NO she is NOT writing Harry Potter 8. The first person to ever to become a billionaire by writing, J K Rowling is currently busy being an activist supporting noble causes and charities.

The author often tackles LGBT issues on social media. In March 2015, a fan on Twitter asked Rowling about Dumbledore being gay. Rowling, 49, revealed Dumbledore’s sexuality in 2007, after the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was published.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, fan Ana Kocovic asked, “Thank you so much for writing Harry Potter. I wonder why you said that Dumbledore is a gay because I can’t see him in that way”. The author’s response was simple yet powerful, “Maybe because gay people just look like…people?”

This isn’t Rowling’s first time talking about LGBT issues on Twitter. In December 2014, when a fan asked her if Hogwarts was a safe place for LGBT students, Rowling responded by tweeting an image made by the Youth Project, based in Nova Scotia.

The author dropped from Forbes’ billionaire list to millionaire status in 2012 due to Britain’s high taxes and her charitable giving. “New information about Rowling’s estimated $160 million in charitable giving combined with Britain’s high tax rates bumped the Harry Potter scribe from our list this year,” Forbes noted in its “Billionaire Dropoffs” list.

Rowling calls One Parent Families, a nonprofit that empowers single-parent households, one of her favorite causes. The organization provides child-care services and helps parents discover new job and education opportunities. The writer has also founded her own charity, Lumos named after a spell in the Harry Potter books, which helps poor and disabled children who live in institutions and orphanages in Eastern Europe and in the United States. Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination, a slim book containing Rowling’s 2008 commencement speech at the Massachusetts university, was recently released. Profits from the book will be donated to Harvard financial aid and to Lumos.
