For one day, a pet store in Brazil subtly replaced all of its pets for sale with animals from shelters. This video from Associação Quatro Patinhas shares the story of the pet store and its unknowing customers, who unexpectedly found their perfect furry companion amongst shelter animals. The video really is the perfect demonstration of the well-known expression ‘the best things in life are free’.
The store decided to carry out the experiment not only to help some of these loving animal find homes, but to also determine whether shelter animals would seem more desirable if they appeared to be for sale.
Sadly, it is estimated that 6 to 8 million lost, abandoned and unwanted cats and dogs are admitted into animal shelters every year. Shockingly, roughly half of these animals will be euthanized in order to make space in the already overcrowded shelters.
In order to help change people’s perspective on shelter animals, the store made its customers believe these animals were your regular high priced pets. Unsurprisingly, the people and families who came to the store immediately bonded with one of the pets on offer. However, they became shocked when they approached the staff to request a purchase and they were told there was no charge.
Initially the customers responded with disbelief, however once informed of the true nature of the generous gesture they responded positively and happily took home their new family members. The day was a success, many people’s eyes were opened to the need of animal adoption, and most importantly many shelter animals found loving homes.
If you or someone you know is thinking about adding a new furry addition to your family, locate your nearest animal shelter before scouting the pet stores. Most likely, you will fall in love with one of the many animals there in need a home. Better than buying a life, is saving one.
