On a visit to Bulgaria in 2012 as a volunteer for the A21 Campaign, a nonprofit aiming to prevent human trafficking around the world, Tanner Wendell Stewart, a Seattle-based photographer, spotted a man holding a baby. He wanted to capture the moment but he was shocked when he was told that the he could buy his baby for $50.
“To experience human trafficking on a firsthand level – that it’s not just a statistic, that now it’s actually the face of this baby. It’s completely shifted my passion and desire to help this cause,” Stewart said.
So Stewart raised $74,000 through crowdfunding, in order to publish a book of his photographs – one taken each day of the year throughout 2013. Through his Shoot the Skies book project, he’s set to donate more than $50,000 to the A21 Campaign.
