The story of an average millennial living in the 21st century. My whole life I have been told: just wait until you get older, things will change; things will get better. Now, into my 30’s I look at the world around me and things are no different than they have always been.
When I was 2 years old, George Bush became President; my freshmen year of high school – George Bush became President; at 30 years old, Jeb Bush was one of the leading candidates to become next President. When I was 6 years old, Bill Clinton became President and 24 years later, now his wife Hillary Clinton is the odds on favorite to become the next President for the next 8 years of my life. Are we living in an Oligarchy or a Democracy? I honestly do not know anymore.
I graduated college in 2009, just in time for the great recession. For my entire adult life, this is all I have known, and unlike our political leaders who rose to prominence early in their lives, at a different point in time in this country, I do not know what it is like to live/work in an ‘America that is great’. Unlike them, I do not remember a time in America where everyone was succeeding and prospering.
The older I get, it seems not to matter. The baby boomers have a strangle hold on the global power structure of this world and refuse to let it go. With the older I continue to get, I just cant help but wonder will my time – my generation’s time ever come? I can tell you, it certainly doesn’t feel like it.
Hillary Clinton is 68 and Donald Trump is 70 years old – barely above the average age of the US Senate. Needless to say, our country, government and laws are dictated by the same old generation of people. A generation that refuses to die off or retire or leave power – they exist just to maintain the status quo.
These people stand in front of the nation and say” if you just work hard and go to school, anyone can succeed in this country.” Of course they believe this, when they were young, this certainly was true. These people do now know what it is like to grow up, or try to make a living in today’s time. By the time recession hit, they were already world leaders and millionaires – of course they believe the system still works. After all, it worked for them all along didn’t it?
I think about the times in which these people grew up. When they were my age, Trump and Clinton were living in the 1970’s and 80’s. Things were cheap, the economy was expanding, jobs seemed unlimited and if you were lucky enough to go to college, you were immediately qualified for any job you wanted.
The truth is, times have changed. At no other time in history has America grown at a slower rate than it has over the last 10 years. The job market has become over-saturated. In 2016 you are no longer considered special for having gone to college, a college degree in 2016 is the equivalent of a high school diploma in the 1970’s – only it costs about 600% more to get a degree today than it did in the 1970’s. You are reading an article from someone who graduated with $100,000 in student loan debt.
This is the disconnect between our political leaders and today’s generation. Our leaders do not understand how we no longer have the same opportunities or circumstances they once had. I’ll go as far as to say that the baby boomer generation is the most selfish and short sited generation in world history.
I look at the state of our country and the world today, the US has 19.2 trillion dollars in national debt and the US economy, as well as the global economy, is in complete shambles – on the verge of collapse. Our government has printed trillions of dollars in the period of the last few year just to stay afloat, all money to be paid back, with interest, for decades to come. Blatantly sabotaging future generations with continuous debt, but this is not the worse burden the boomers have saddled future generation with.
We continue to exhaust our fossil fuel reserves at alarming rates, destroying environments and the climate in the process with no end in sight. Add to this the fact that income inequality/disparity continues to grow increasingly larger and civil unrest – the cultural divide in society – hasn’t been this bad since the 50’s and 60’s.
All of the current global conflicts, societal problems and disastrous economic policies have been created by one generation, the baby boomers who continue to remain in control of all our governments. Another election comes in 2016 and this generation asks the world for more time at the helm to continue their policies. What ground do they have to stand on, why do people continue to listen to them, what is wrong with society?
The saddest part of this story is that the millennial generation has within itself the power to change the world, only we do not seem to care. For the first time in history the world has more millennials than baby boomers, except we don’t vote or strive for change. Instead we complain, sit on the couch or play video games – #PokemonGo.
In our disgust for the status quo and political corruption we sit back and say, fuck they system, it doesn’t matter what we do, the elites will always control the world. I see it all the time, I see it on Facebook in nearly every response to my articles. Comments plastered on social media saying ‘why are you talking about politics, votes don’t matter, the whole system is rigged, why are you telling us to vote, nothing will ever change.’
It is damn shame to see. There is a philosophy, the law of attraction, which states that like attracts like; negative and/or positive beliefs manifest negative/positive results. For example, you say that your life sucks, under the law of attraction, so be it – your life will suck. You say that you cant change the world; that it doesn’t matter what you do, then so be it – nothing will ever change. As we can all clearly see, this philosophy must be true because nothing ever appears to change.
Our generation has within itself the ability to change the world, end the rain of destruction and misery the baby boomers have bestowed upon society – the entire world. People talk all the time, particularly within Anonymous about starting a revolution! Here is the thing though, you cant start a revolution just by saying FUCK SOCIETY and then sitting back behind your computer screen or smartphone – believing that you are somehow above it all.
You really want a revolution, you really want to change the world? Go make it happen. I am sick of being pissed off about the accepted state of affairs, just accepting everything in this world as if it is what it is, completely beyond my control, and I am sure I am not alone. When will society ever step up and finally make a change?

How?
You ask the right questions: the ones which people haven’t asked before and which, when answered, provide you with the true state of things. This writer made an effort to set the correct frame: the way things are going in US is not the way that is best for everyone in it, and in a democracy, this shit doesn’t fly. Democracy is about active participation of citizens in policy making, for the sake of coming up with laws and economic strategies that benefit the majority (not the few wealthy). If you believe the media however, it’s all about choosing sides and screwing the other side. Combined with diversions like Kardashians, sporting events, Pokemon go, Tinder, etc., you are left with a society which abandons any effort to get a hold of it’s destiny, leaving it in the hands of dictators. F Society is not the answer indeed, because without the collective pressure of like-minded people, politicians and bankers will continue to gradually enslave citizens, by making them more divided, less educated, more indoctrinated.
So back to the how:
– you form new parties or support the smaller ones which have an agenda that serves the majority of the people (they may not win at first but slowly they can bring down big parties which, at least in US, have long since abandoned any shred of dignity and idealism)
– you denounce with all your might the absurdity of thinking that America was built on selfishness. Every time some as-hole says the economy has to be let free to do it’s thing, remember that the economy doesn’t give a shit about little people, it only works to concentrate resources in the hands of the few. No, America is its people, from all nationalities and races, coming together to this land to escape persecution and fight injustice, the elements, and anyone who wants to rob them of their independence. Shut down your TV, tell your parents to do the same, and use your own mind to judge whether something is right or wrong by looking at facts, not opinions.
– go on strikes, stop buying brand crap, petition people
– in general, consider acting on your beliefs instead of complaining at the watering hole and in dive bars to friends how shit is fucked up.
It’s like God wanted me to see this. The law of attraction is God’s gift in power to those who believe for the good. I truly believe we can make a difference. We have to to stand together on the consensus that our children and future generations can live in peace and prosperity. We can change history guys.. to hell with its repetitive deception! I chose the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIGHT.
To control the younger generations is, to control the future. Atleast, that’s what people think. But wanting to have control is, to be afraid, to have none at all. Meaning that you’re not a trusting person. To be rich, to have everything, one can ever wish for. Will create the feeling of power and control.
Remember this before we start to understand those, who ruin the future of the next generations. Every coin has it’s flipside. The one who enjoys living, in wealth and luxury.. is also sitting, beneath the sword of Damoclees.
The world is changing as we speak. It’s always moving and has always done so. We humans are the only ones, standing still. The world is literally moving beneath our feet.
Stop wasting time, trying to unravel the actions of the old guard and start focusing on the subjects that matter. Like your own future and that of your (our) children.
By letting the next generation, focusing on the things that don’t matter, the puppetmasters want to buy more time. Because they know aswell, that their circus act wont last for ever.
In the land of the blind, the one eyed is king!
This world is bound,
to a contract.
In blood it was signed.
Find the contract.
And you will stop being blind.
LEGION VII
This is beautifully writ, I’m an emerging filmmaker whose entering into a high profile competition very soon. Is it okay if I use some of your words on a topic alike to yours?
everything I write is free and open source, by all means
Thank you so much
We can just have reunion and build up a révolution figuring how to get money make plans in action and take out people in the way sorry french is my first language but people we need to move and waking up if we don’t take the chance that we have today cause i think it’s starting to get in the Brain of the world population it’s time make it happen we can do what’s need be done!!!!!?????
Right on, Righteous! Every word of this is on point!
I’m french so this might be out of place, but I just wanted to point out the fact that some people actually try to do stuff but social medias make them appear as complete retards. So first thing should be finding a way to stop that “control” they have over opinions, even on people of our generation. Sadly I have no clue, but am sure willing to “fight back” for my country
