Jamie Oliver Asks High School Students Where The Foods They Eat Come From, Their Answers Will Shock You [Video]

In his quest to test the knowledge of high school students about where the food we eat come from, the English celebrity chef, restaurateur, and media personality Jamie Oliver, known for his food-focused television shows,  uncovered a great deal of ignorance or better lack of knowledge among high school students.

Jamie Oliver had set out to show Americans how far removed they are from the foods they eat in his series, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.” He then visited one school after another to give the cafeterias’ menus a makeover. His hope was to inspire other communities to start serving healthier foods to their children and improve their overall health.

At the schools, he asked the students about where their foods come from as he held up poster boards with pictures of three different foods. One board showed an apple, an avocado, and broccoli.

Oliver asked the students where guacamole comes from. Shockingly, most of the children were clueless. One even answered with certainty that it comes from an apple. Again, he asked one of the students where cheese comes from, with the choices being A cow, B macaroni, and C the moon. The student answered B which is macaroni.

He continued asking more questions about sources of the foods, and the students too continued answering wrongly. Certainly, what seemed like common sense to most people left the students in a wonderland.

Obviously looking visibly frustrated in the video, Oliver said the students cannot be blamed for their ignorance about where they get one of the most basic necessities of life. He said the complete lack of importance placed on food education in schools by authorities today is the cause.

“We let them down, we created this whole environment. They’ve just been born into it and they’re coming out at 17, and they haven’t even got that basic knowledge. It’s bad,” he said.

On his website, Food Revolution Day where he has created a campaign for food education in schools, he stated “My wish is to create a strong sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”

According to statistics, there are more than 42 million children worldwide fighting obesity. And Oliver has made it his goal to help turn the situation around by first educating kids on the food they eat.

The food activist, Virginia Alaniz wrote on Thoughtful Women that Oliver’s campaign on food is gaining grounds. According to her, the farm-to-table movement is gaining popularity, and more people are becoming aware of its benefits to their health and their local economy.
