Beyond the realms of governments, artists have been striving to give whistle-blowers the recognition that they rightly deserve- one such work is a statue immortalizing the likes of Snowden, Manning and Assange; enter, ConfoundTheirPolitix.
The character is a journalist in the world of Asterix comix- err, comics- and is all set to counter the propaganda being spread by Julius Caesar in a homage to Julian Assange’s own work in countering the propaganda of some other hulking behemoth of an empire.
“Julian Assange was a model for this character,” said writer Jean-Yves Ferri, as quoted by AFP.
Working at the “Condatum Echo”, ConfoundTheirPolitix will fight against Caesar’s use of propaganda to finally conquer the tiny Gaul village.
The villain of the story aiding Caesar is “Libellus Blockbustus”, a cunning adviser who was inspired by French presidential advisers Henri Guaino and Patrick Buisson who had both worked with Nicolas Sarkozy according to the author.
“As Hitchcock used to say, the more successful the villain, the more successful the story. So we took good care of our villain,” he said.
Apparently ConfoundTheirPolitix was almost called “Wikilix”, but that was probably way too obvious.
Asterix is a bestselling comic book, and one of my childhood favorites. 365 million copies of the comic have been sold worldwide, and 4 million copies of the ConfoundTheirPolitix issue will be printed.
