On July 1, 2015 an American dentist, Walter Palmer from Minnesota shot dead, Cecil the lion in the Zimbabwean Hwange National Park. The killing drew international media attention and sparked outrage among animal conservationists, politicians and celebrities, as well as a strong negative response against Palmer. The Zimbabwean government has stated it will seek Palmer’s extradition to be prosecuted in the country.
But the 13-year-old male lion death at the hands the American lion trophy hunter is revealing more secrets about how many American lion trophy hunters have turned Africa into a stadium, hoping to send home more lion heads as their World Cup trophies.
According to a new documentary entitled Blood Lions, it showed that Cecil’s death is not an isolated incident. It was revealed in the documentary that foreign hunters, mostly Americans kill two to three lions every day in South Africa.
But unlike Cecil, these are not wild lions. They are captive cats, born and bred in cages solely for the purpose of selling them for canned hunts. These cats are walled-in encampments where hunters can easily shoot them without having to stalk them across the savanna.
According to the Take Part, prices for these canned hunts start at about $17,500 and go as high as $50,000. Hunters get to take the heads and skins home, while many of the bones reportedly make their way to China and other countries for use in traditional Asian medicine.
The documentary revealed that between 6,000 and 8,000 big cats live in breeding facilities, waiting to be shot as lions, although official counts of the number of lions in captivity in South Africa are not available.
The Blood Lions documentary was by the concerted efforts of South African conservationist, Ian Michler and American hunter, Rick Swazey. The two risked their lives to thorough investigate the black trade, getting rare footage of crowded breeding facilities of the cats. It is said at a point, dealers threaten to shoot them for trespassing and infringing on their privacy.
It is said South Africa authorities who are involved in the dirty trade officially label the cats as “education and conservation facilities” just to deceive people what they do with the cats. But Michler told National Geographic that these cats could never be released into the wild because they are too acclimated to humans.
“Blood Lions is perhaps the most in-depth and significant look inside the insidious world of South African canned hunts. It shows how nefarious these operators are and visually depicts the massive cruelty of canned lion hunting in grotesque detail”, Chief Executive of Born Free USA (BFUSA), Adam Roberts who helped fund the documentary said.
According to statistics by BFUSA most hunters who pay to shoot captive lions come from the United States. It recently analyzed legal lion exports from South Africa and found that 5,000 of 8,318 lion trophies exported between 2000 and 2013 were sent to the US. BFUSA said this represented 84% of lion trophies which left South Africa to the US.
The filmmakers have said they hope the documentary will expose the lion trophy-hunting industry and shame South Africa into shutting it down. The film was premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in last month and will be screen throughout South Africa and many nations including some networks in the US.

we should make a facility, where we the poor ppl give 1 dollars, and then we are allowed to hunt down anyone who have hunted animals only for sporting! it’s not that they kill them, but that they take their lives for fun and sport. then it must only be fair to catch these ppl and treat them same way they treat our planet! we could put them in a cage, then select which one we want to hunt down, and then they get released, get 2 hours to hide and then we come in with our weapon of choice. bow, riffle or even knife if you wish. then you have all the time to catch the pray. no limits what so ever. and even better 10 dollars so they can breed new animals so it will keep the balance and peace.no wonder why animals attack us for no reason other than fear! if you build a facility for hunting humans, who have killed for sporting, then i wanna support it. it’s much better than i person who wanna kill someone, get locked up with each other. if it’s not for survival then it’s a crime, even though the law may not agree with it. when it comes to life, it is the universal law and not human law that matters! and what a pussy, he got no fucking balls when he take out a domestic lion! not even wild or really loose so it can attack him too!! he’s not a hunter, he’s a coward

If you can find out why and how they have tax exempt status, there are thousands of us who would love to know. I’m assuming because they claim to do CONservation but the only conservation they are involved in, benefits them in the end by insuring a constant supply of animals to kill. Keep up the great work.
I had seen the facebook profiles of some of these people & it truly sadness me that even in this of rapid global mass extinctions and wars; people still crave for blood.
The sad part is that the kill is not for food by some hungry people! It is just recreational! This is the sad american life.
