National Football League (NFL) players are known for their strength and endurance on the field, but even Arizona Cardinals’ Tyrann Mathieu could not handle the conditions some pet owners impose on their dogs. As part of a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaign, Mathieu agreed to sit in a parked sports utility vehicle, on a 90 degree Fahrenheit day, for as long as he could stand it. He lasted approximately eight minutes, by which point the temperature in the vehicle had soared to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. When exiting the car, Mathieu stumbled and was drenched in sweat.

If you’re going to make a dog part of your family, then make him part of your family,” said Mathieu. “Don’t treat him like you wouldn’t treat someone you care about, someone you love.

The PETA public service announcement also pointed out: Unlike Mathieu, canines lack the ability to open the door and exit the car themselves, and some breeds can experience organ failure at a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
