CNN’s #AskACop Triggers Anti-Police Backlash on Twitter

On Tuesday night, CNN thought it would be a good idea to set up an #AskACop hashtag on Twitter. It was for an upcoming segment called #CopsUnderFire:

Perhaps they didn’t anticipate the backlash:

What ensued was a rapid-fire assault on recent and highly publicized incidents of police brutality. Some tweets were sarcastic, others thoughtful, but the vast majority demonstrated frustration and intolerance for the racism and violence of law enforcement:

Of course, some tweets showed support for cops:

But the results of CNN’s Twitter event overwhelmingly showed the growing, heated discontent toward police:

Naturally, @CNNTonight, the program hosting #AskACop, made it a point to tweet pro-cop propaganda:

It is unknown whether or not CNN expected the inflammatory results of #AskACop, but it’s difficult to believe no one saw it coming. Especially when they declared it a success either way:

It’s possible it was a PR stunt to salvage plummeting ratings, but regardless, the Twitter backlash is a positive sign that public opinion is trending toward police accountability.

Anonymous: A Million Men – Trailer

10

They are the 99%. Join filmmaker Patrick Ireland as he tumbles down the rabbit hole, penetrating the very core of Anonymous in the build-up to the infamous ‘Million Mask March’ on the 5th of November 2014.

With civil unrest rising around the globe and the western economy struggling to recover from the 2008 financial crash, the dynamics in which social action and protests take place is changing.

Cyber activism and the internet have given birth to a new breed of activists, united not by geographical location, but by a common goal. The 5th of November 2013 Million Mask March protests showed the organisational power of this group, linking 400 cities in a global protest of which human kind has never seen before.

They have done this again on the 5th November 2014 and with several ten thousand people marching all over the globe – is this the start of a revolution? Watch the Trailer:

Man Arrested After Filming Cops Beating Man and Pregnant Girlfriend

3

Written by: Carey Wedler at thenantimedia.org

DENVER, CO – In August, a man filmed Denver police beating a man and tripping his pregnant girlfriend over drug suspicions. The police noticed Levi Frasier recording, confiscated his Samsung tablet without permission, and returned it without the footage of the police brutality. Frasier was able to restore the video with a cloud application. It was released last month and just last Thursday, he was arrested at a traffic stop.

He had said of the officer’s actions:

“It was very well known that the video was shot and things were done on the video that shouldn’t be leaked out, that it would be bad for the reputations of the police officers.”

His December 11th arrest happened as he was leaving the F.B.I. office, where he was cooperating with the federal investigation into the violent actions of officers Christopher Evans and Charles “Chris” Jones IV in August. He was on his way to give an interview to Fox 31, whom he gave the video footage to for their investigation last month.

Frasier was stopped for a “newly activated traffic warrant” in Park County, CO.  Fox 31 reported that

“Records show the warrant is for failing to appear in court on two traffic tickets from several months ago, failing to show proof of insurance and lack of vehicle registration.”

He was not allowed to bond out over the minor traffic offenses and was forced to spend the night in jail.

Denver police refused to comment on the story. They did, however, previously respond to a story where Frasier criticized the officers. They responded in an attempt to smear his credibility by drawing attention to his criminal record and accusing him of using “aliases.”  The report, ironically, was called “Accuracy Matters.”

This move drew condemnation from the Denver mayor’s Citizen Oversight Board, which wrote an open letter to Denver Police Chief, Robert White:

“Instead of thanking the witness who came forward to share information, the DPD publicly attacked his character.  It is very likely that the DPD’s attacks on this witness will only reinforce fears in the community, and inhibit other members of the public from cooperating with DPD or IAB if they witness possible officer misconduct in the future.”

The open letter was dated Wednesday, December 10th-the day before Frasier was arrested for his traffic violations.

His arrest is merely another sign that Denver police are desperate and angry after being exposed for their excessive use of force and attempts to censor evidence.

Meanwhile the department has defended the violent actions of their officers concerning the August incident and Officer Charles “Chris” Jones has even received a promotion and raise.

First Marijuana Vending Machine In Vancouver

26

$50 for half on ounce for ‪#‎Marijuana‬ ‪#‎Pot‬ ‪#‎Dope‬ ‪#‎SnoopDogg‬

The first cannabis-dispensing machine in Canada has begun operating in Vancouver, following on from the first machine installed recently in the US state of Colorado. The difference? The Canadian machine doesn’t ID you.

Despite the controversy surrounding the plant and the endless bickering that has marked the discourse around it, the machine looks strangely ordinary and even less threatening than a cigarette pack, with big green leaves and certainly no indication that it contains something that is so hotly debated.

Unarmed Black Man, With His Hands Up, Shot By Florida Cop

14

Written by: Vandita

In a gruesome incident on December 8, Sergeant Robert McCarthy shot a 28-year-old African American and critically wounded him after media reports and witnesses said that the man had his hands up and was begging not to be shot.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings came to the rescue of the Florida cop saying that Bartee failed to comply with McCarthy’s commands and made extensive furtive movements, making the deputy fear for his safety.

Eye witnesses say that after locating a stolen car at an apartment complex just after midnight McCarthy fired three shots, one of which hit Cedric Bartee.

A ‘concerned’ Demings, who himself is an African American, said he was trying to be transparent in holding the press conference ‘because of the backdrop of everything happening in the country at this time’. “It’s concerning to me how the public might react,” he added.

Bartee, the car-theft suspect, was released from custody two days later after posting a $1,000 bond. McCarthy was sent on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.

According to police records, no weapons were found with Bartee, or inside the car. Also, McCarthy was not wearing a body camera, and there is no dashboard-camera video available of the shooting.

Channel 9 has obtained cell phone video shot by a witness though…
