Wrongful Murder Conviction Overturned 30 YEARS Later

0

Written by: ‘M’

Once again, the American justice system commits another heinous act of mistreatment against innocent U.S citizens. Two brothers, Henry McCollum and Leon Brown, whom of which are mentally disabled, were unduly coerced into confessing rape and murder of an 11-year old girl in Lumberton, North Carolina 30 years ago. They are now acquitted. Although, this case is one of the most gruesome examples of police coercion.

On Tuesday, September 2nd. A judge ordered the release of both Henry McCollum, now 50, and Leon Brown, now 46. The case against the two disabled men were always weak. The case fell apart after DNA evidence implicated that another man who lived a block from the location, where the victim’s body was found, was undoubtedly involved.

Police unfairly coerced confessions from the two mentally disabled men. The two men were teenagers at the time, which became the primary backing used for the case. It is rather ambiguous as to why the police focused on the two men. The physical evidence that were supposedly used to back their claim were  vacant and lacked a solid foundation. Roscoe Artis, the man now suspected of committing the atrocities, confessed to committing a similar rape and murder around the same time.

At the time of ruling, McCollum was awaiting execution on death row and Brown was serving a life sentence in prison.  When the judge announced his decision to set the brothers free, the courtroom erupted into a jovial blowout. “We waited all these long years for this,” said James McCollum, the father of Henry McCollum. “Thank you, Jesus.” The absolution ends decades of legal and political rivalry over a case that received nationwide attention, and also became infamous in North Carolina, vividly reflecting the country’s defective predilection of the death penalty.

In 1994, when the Supreme Court refused to review the case, Justice Antonin Scalia delineated Mr. McCollum’s offense as, “So heinous that it would be hard to argue against the death penalty.” But, in a debate, Justice Henry Blackmun argued that McCollum’s mental age of 9 made the death penalty disproportionate and unconstitutional. No physical evidence ever involved McCollum or Brown to the crime. However, a local adolescent cast a rumor upon McCollum and Brown, who had recently moved to the area.

After five hours of questioning and interrogation without an attorney present and with his mother weeping in the hall, not allowed to see him, McCollum, out of frustration, confessed to the crime saying that he and three other boys killed the girl. After he signed a statement written by investigators, he asked, “Can I go home now?” Later that night Brown also confessed after being told that McCollum had confessed and that he could get the death penalty if he did not cooperate also. Both men afterwards recanted saying their confessions were coerced. The other two men mentioned in Mr. McCollum’s confession were never prosecuted.

In recent years, attorneys at the Center for Death Penalty Litigation, working with private law firms, began pressing for DNA testing of the physical evidence in the case, which included a cigarette butt discovered near sticks found at the homicide. Recent DNA testing by a completely independent state agency found a match for the DNA on the cigarette butt to Roscoe Artis, who lived only a block from where the body was found and who had a history of convictions for sexual assault.

Only weeks following the homicide, Mr. Artis admitted to the rape and murder of an 18-year-old woman. Officials never explained why, despite the extraordinary similarities, they kept their focus on McCollum and Brown. Joe Freeman Britt, the original prosecutor said last week he still believed the men were guilty.

From Taiji to Captivity

4

Written by: Poppy

Many people don’t know the truth about dolphins in captivity and believe that they swim happily into tiny captive pools. I decided its time to break that myth.

From September 1st of each year Taiji, a small cove in Japan, will become the world centre for dolphin slaughter and capture for dolphinariums around the world. This is a shocking and violent act which lasts until the thirtieth of April.

Each morning a group of about 26 “fishermen” go out in around 12 boats in search for dolphins or small whales. If one boat finds a pod they signal to the others with smoke. Once around 5 are together the start to scare the dolphins into shallow water by hammering the side of the boat to create a deafening “wall” of sound. This terrifies the dolphins, causing them to panic and swim away from the sound, in the direction of the driving boats, thus driving them straight toward “the cove” where the torture begins until they die.

The dolphins are terrified, they can be kept up to 4 days with no food, trapped in a tiny cove.

“These dolphins are wrangled and wrestled into the killing cove, where they’ve sustained multiple injuries. Dolphin killers deliberately run over the pod with skiffs, they wrestle them, man-handled them into captive nets before even being slaughtered,” Melissa Sehgal, a Sea Shepherd activist, told Reuters.

The cove has a covered area, the purpose to hide the truth of what happens there. Hidden from view, the fishermen drive metal rods into the dolphins’ spinal cords and leave them to die. It takes up to 5 minutes for these dolphins to die, they bleed out, suffocate or drown then are loaded on to skiffs and taken the butcher house.

Maybe they are the lucky ones, the unmarked, beautiful ones are captured. Often the trainers of dolphin shows will take part. These, usually young dolphins are physically restrained, wrestled and netted, lifted out the water and taken to small pens, where they begin their life service to the entertainment industry. dolphin2

The captive dolphin trade is a multi million dollar business,  the dolphin hunters make approximately $32,000 USD for each live dolphin they capture.  These figures can go from $32,000 USD up to $250,000 USD for a trained captive dolphin.  Last year the total made from selling dolphins to marine parks was $1,618,029.71 USD.

As we know dolphins are sentient beings with human like family structures. Their mother names them, they are taught manners, love to play and explore. They are very intelligent, have remarkable systems of echolocation and communication. In relation to body size, the brain of the adult bottlenose is comparable in size to that of humans,  it is twice as complicated and possesses 11/2 times as many cells.

they are capable of imitation and memorisation. They have been shown to demonstrate foresight and learn from observation. They can problem solve and preform elaborate tasks all in the wild.

The dolphins are extremely traumatised after the experience of seeing their family slaughtered.  Its a slow process to begin training them. Firstly they are tube fed with force into their stomachs a concoction of liquidised fish and tranquillizers. Its alien for wild dolphins to eat dead fish so they have to learn to eat it.  Once this happens the training begins.

The natural talents of these amazing creatures are manipulated by the trainers using a discipline based on reward i.e. the trick or manoeuvre is carried out correctly, they get food. Do it wrong, they starve.

The trick is to make the public believe the dolphin is doing these tricks for the sheer fun of it. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

In some cases captive dolphins have been known to commit suicide by starving themselves to death, battering the walls of the tanks repeatedly and even drowning. They are air breathing mammals like us and need to consciously make the decision to breathe.

The next time you consider paying to see a captive dolphins show or a swim with experience remember this, to pay the entry fee you are paying for dolphins to be slaughtered.

To Protect and Serve? Oklahoma Cop Charged With Rapes and Sexual Assaults

10

Written by: Cadence

Daniel Ken Holtzclaw, an Oklahoma City Police Officer, has been charged with numerous sex crimes which allegedly happened while he was on duty. The offences include rape, forced oral sodomy, indecent exposure and stalking.

These allegations have been made by seven different black women, ranging from a 34-year-old to a 57-year-old grandmother. It’s unknown whether the alleged crimes were racially motivated.

Holtzclaw, a 27-year-old former football star, once made the Detroit Lions NFL team. He was placed on leave from the police force when the investigation began in June.

The first allegation was from a woman who accused the cop of sexually assaulting her during a traffic stop on a boulevard near the state Capitol. Police were then forced to investigate other contact Holtzclaw had with the public since he began his street patrols around 18 months before. exchange-sports-focus

Daniel Holtzclaw was a three-year veteran of the force before being placed on leave in June.

The offences are reported to include three counts of first-degree rape, seven counts of forcible oral sodomy, six counts of sexual battery and six counts of indecent exposure, as well as first-degree rape by instrumentation, felonious stalking and first-degree burglary.

Bail was initially set at $5 million, but Holtzclaw’s attorney requested a reduction. As a result of the court testimony the bond was subsequently dropped to $500,000 this week.

Supporters have set up a Facebook page, Twitter account and GoFundMe page to raise defence and bail money for the Holtzclaw. The GoFundMe crowdfunding page has since been closed down by the website after it received a lot of complaints, but not before raising over $7,500 in a few days. The family are still asking for PayPal donations, and Holtzclaw remains in jail.

3D PRINTING SOLAR PANELS MADE POSSIBLE

13

Written by: Chaotic Indian

Open Source technology has really advanced in the past few years. More and more people are becoming increasingly aware of the open-source movement and thus, we have more and more creative ideas appearing. The latest such idea comes from Shawn Freyne and Alex Hornstein from the Philippines, who have come up with a method to print solar panels every 15 seconds.

The “Open Source Solar Factory”, developed by the duo, is a kit small enough to fit on a desktop and is efficient enough to produce 300 thousand solar panels a year, which roughly translates to one panel every 15 seconds. Most of the m materials used is simple – glue, silicon cells, glass and plastic. We can see that this method can drastically reduce the price of solar cells. With enough time and effort, there may be enough panels to power major

items like cars, houses, etc. Since the project is DIY, the developers have managed to reduce

total cost by nearly 50%, seeing as there is no intensive labor involved.

The 2 scientists involved have a strong passion for inventing and the idea of clean, free energy everywhere. They wanted to make the project as economical as possible. They have even put up a tutorial on Instructables.com for the kit, so that other people might be able to make such kits of their own. solar printer

Above – the Solar Factory kit in action.

At the moment, the duo have completed an entire round of successful funding on Kickstarter, a major crowd-funding site. They have raised $70,000 and are now aiming to raise $100,000 for their continued research on the topic.
